F5: F5 vs FS700 with Odyssey 7Q

Hello
I' ve been working two years with my F3 and recording 10bit422 to Atomos Blade. I' m very happy with the imagequality, data-size and the grading possibilities. Because the necessarily need of slowmotion, I go with the fs700. And that's the trouble. The imagequality is a big step backward from the F3. Yesterday I have tested a Sony F5 and the footage ist great, as well in slowmotion. The xavc is very nice in data-size and grading possibilities, but I know with O7Q RAW I can go much further. I have the chance to buy this Demo-F5 with 20% discount. I think this is a good way because it fit's perfect to my CP.2 Set (21, 35, 100mm).

What are your thought's?

Sony F5 - FS700/O7Q
10bit 422 180p - 2K/240p 4K/60p RAW but very very big data-size (projects backups.....12min. 512GB 4k/60p is a joke)
Great body and fast menu options - plastic body (not a right cine-cam)
intern recording - sdi-cable recording
great evf - great 7.7" display

Thanks a lot.

I'd absolutely go for the F5, much easier to rig, operate and shoot with. You also have the security of internal recording (which always helps me sleep better at night). From the specs I've read, I'd be pretty surprised if the F5 and FS700 didn't share the same sensor - so I think image quality would be neck and neck between those two cameras.

The only gotcha is that the FS700/O7Q combination WILL give you 4k recording, whilst the F5 will NOT (unless you add the raw recorder).

I would say go F5 all the way but I would also recommend waiting two weeks until Sony makes their announcements at NAB regarding new features coming to the F's. There might be something there that makes your decision even easier. Or maybe not.. we'll see.

I think this is a hard one.

Firstly the F5 is kind of dead without compressed 4k onboard - what were Sony thinking releasing that on the 700 and not doing the same on the F5

The cost of going raw with the two cameras is interesting.

Sony Raw memory is a rip off - (F5) but the lack of compression (F700) also presents a significant data cost issues.

As for the bodies, well again I dont see there to be a clear winner.

F5
FZ mount = solid
I guess a little more robust

F700
Audio pots
Good earphone jack position
Light and nimble
AF on some lenses
Can accomodate a speed booster

Also there is 'cache' F5 is kind of 'more pro' than a 700, more pro enough to command rental fees, I dunno.

I think to choose one needs to consider ones own work.

For example I think the F5, shooting 2k raw with an S16 zoom would be a great 'mode of use' but other will see other things in the 700

Certainly Id consider two things..

-The O7q doesnt have a rep yet (can it handle hours of pro abuse for months?)
-NAB

4k and high fps are great features to sell to a customer and FS700+7Q is the cost effective getting great looking footage. I'd love to go F5 but can't really justify the cost.

That's all good specs, but I' m thinking about backups and archiving raw dng material from 20-25 projects (imagefilms, interviews, eventmovies.....) every year.
That's my thinking with 10bit about the balancing act between image quality and data size.
If clients require 4k in one or two years, then I can update to R5. That's my consideration.

I do think that 10 or 12 bit 4:2:2/4:4:4 goes a long way and more is seldom needed. But the cost of the F5 plus media, batteries, charger and EVF/monitor puts it without reach. On the other hand I see the FS700 as something that would suit my clients better. It does tick all the important features like S35 sensor, high framerate, slog2 and when you go 7Q it open up all sorts of options.

The F5 is superior no doubt but for the money I see the FS700 as more cost effective.
