F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

I just read something on the Adamwilt site about differences between F5 and F6 mode, it seems to me that it dont apply to PAL DVX camera's, because he is talking about pulldowns and recovery original frames etc. When shooting PAL there is no such thing. So I shoot to go out on DVD, do I have to stay with F5 mode, or go for the F6 mode. F6 mode looks less fimic than F5 mode I think, and I dial the detail level in F5 mode
to -7 to get a filmic look, yes, it looks a little soft, but it's filmic I think. I am gonna try detail on -5, and see if it still looks filmic.

It's good to have a little bit of detail - normally you don't notice it.  I keep mine at -4 and don't have any noticeable problems when seeing it on a monitor.

*I am shooting NTSC, but detail levels are detail levels*

They seem quite similar to me, but the F6 looks more filmic to me. I don't know.

I have to play more around with it.

All the best

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Yes thats true
F5 = Thick
F6 = Thin

Thats the only difference i know between the two on the PAL version.

So shoot "thick" if you only planning to show it on a 4:3 TV or if you have a anamorpic adapeter and show it on a widescreen tv.

If you gonna do any up resizing shoot on "thin" mode. Im shooting everything in thin because i want to make it easy for HDTV convertion in the future.

As for detail I use -3 nowdays.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Do you set detail -3 on F6 mode?

And for going to progressive dvd, is F6 mode the way to go? Because the default cine-gamma is very different compared to the cine-gamma-v on F5 mode.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

well i have the DVX100e not DVX100ae so i have no problem chosing the right cinegamma. Its just one for all.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

But do you set detail -3 on f6 mode because otherwise it looks to digital?

And is F6 mode only of you are going to film, or is it also for making progressive dvd? Because not only resolution is differend, the cine-gamma is set for dynamic range instead of video, but dvd is still video right?

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Thin and thick are the essential differences.

Shoot in thin mode to improve vertical resolution. BUT thin lines will flicker on a TV screen.

My question is: so I want access to the better resolution of thin mode for a future possibility, but something needs to be delivered from the footage now for SD TV screen.

Is there a software post process that can "thicken" up those fine pixels which were recorded in thin mode so they stop flickering?

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Vegas and Premiere have filters for "reduce interlace flicker", I'd suspect other editing programs should have the same. That's what you'd want to use.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

A little confused. "Reduce Interlace Flicker". How does this function actually work. I raise this because, as we all know, the footage shot in progressive mode is different to traditional interlaced footage.
My concern about Gaurasion blur is that is softens everything (or does it?), and I might not want to do that.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Reduce Interlace Flicker blurs the lines of the odd & even fields together a little, vertically. It simulates (in post) the same process that THICK mode does in-camera. So theoretically you could have the best of both worlds, THIN for your high-res needs and then use reduce-interlace-flicker to create a THICK version for interlaced television display.

Re: F5 or F6 mode om PAL dvx?

Why is the detail level in f6 mode zero and in f5 mode -4 in the default setting? Does f6 mode look softer?
And if you shoot in f6 mode for going out to dvd, do you still use the cine gamma_D instead of cine gamma_V?
