F55: F5/F55 in post & color grading...

Still trying to figure it out... a colorist friend send me and another friend... two emails... here's the first one...

Since you've both asked about it, I figured I'd let you guys know that I've managed to get my hands on some F55 RAW footage. Haven't had a chance to dump it into Resolve yet, but I've been playing around with it in Premiere to get a feeling for performance.

Thoughts so far:
1) Playback - I'm getting real-time playback at half-resolution (2K/1080) with no hitches whatsoever. (Mac Pro, 12x2.66, 12GB, Internal RAID0) While there's a render going on in the background no less.

2) Control - As near as I can tell there aren't any RAW settings for the footage in Premiere, so you're limited to the camera settings. Not a huge deal, as long as the settings are set right.

I'll get back to you on image quality and such once I've had a chance to poke at it in more depth.

The second email...

Threw the footage into Resolve to play a bit. Didn't really do anything super in depth, but the results thus far are EXTREMELY promising. Dynamic range is incredible. Noise floor is basically non-existent. Pushed it around to see if I could make the image break up and I couldn't. (I mean, I *can*, but only by doing things that you'd never do in a real grade)

I'll keep you posted as I do more experimentation, but so far it's looking like a really promising choice.

once he lets me know more I'll pass it on...

I had posted a Premiere Raw workflow video a couple of weeks ago. You are correct that you get no Raw control whatsoever in Premiere.

And those of us who have played with Raw footage in Resolve agree with what you've found. You can push it all over the place and the noise is quite low.

I am thinking that a better workflow would be to bring into Resolve, do a one light on each clip should you so desire, and then export ProRes clips for the edit. When picture is locked, bring back to Resolve to conform and then grade. 4K raw is hefty to deal with in NLE.

Definitely interested in hearing your about your experiences.
