I just posted this on Sony's forum since they were asking for feedback. This is just my 2 cents and pertains to the capabilities that I need. Others may have totally different priorities.
"In regards specifically to HD capabilities, If RGB444 out over SDI is enabled at release in v.1, I would personally much rather have 120 fps HFR in XAVC much sooner then September compared to say SR444. Reason being, if a client demands 444 it can be provided with the nominal rental of a Gemini or updated Pix 240. If they want HFR above 60p, we're out of luck and would force us owner operators to rent a RED, Alexa or FS700 to the production instead of our F5/55 and lose about grand a day towards ROI.
All things being loosely equal and not counting the 4K RAW capability, a F3 (which I own) can be accessorized to mimic 90% (1080 60p, S-LOG, RGB 444, MLUT's, etc) of what the F5 offers for the next 8 months. We all know the F5 will be a vastly superior camera to the F3 for a number of reasons, but for the first 5-10 months it's falling a little short of what was advertised.
Without being dramatic, I pre-ordererd a F5 back in November and Im now having serious reservations and may wait until September. For those needing 4K immediately or who dont already own a kitted out F3, these issues may not concern them as much. For F3 owners this firmware schedule is making a lot of us pause.
We really appreciate Sony's interest in hearing from us owner/operators and giving us a forum to directly address issue's."
I couldn't agree more Fotojorno. You will also have the benefit of seeing how well these cameras perform in the field. And NAB tends to shift the playing field a bit and we are in the pre-NAB period now.
I hear ya. My only issue with waiting until September is the 8 months lost "rental" revenue towards return on investment. With the speed of camera releases these days, 8 months could very well be a third of the F5/55's life. I cant imagine what new feature's would render it obsolete but who knows these days. On the other hand, every time I shoot my F3 is making me money as it paid for itself months ago. What to do...?
What I know is FS-700 is providing 12-bit RAW via single 3G-SDI.
The 4k recorder in 16-bit will be around the 960mbps data rate mark, that is 120MB/s or 7.2GB per minute, or 432GB per hour.
If somehow the 4k recorder will allow 12-bit RAW recording (hopefully it does) then youi will be looking at approximately 90MB/s or 5.4GB per minute, or 324GB per hour.
The compression ratio some of us here have speculated betwen 3.2:1 or 3.6:1
Keep in mind that Sony is listening to users and if there are enough requests and if development is feasible, features scheduled later could be available earlier. I also know that there very well may be other enhancements not on the roadmap.
Ver. 1.03 - released Mar 1st 2013 (addresses immediate correction to the “black edge on highlights” issue reported by some users)
Ver. 1.10 - releasing early March (Sony will post contents shortly)
it kind of sucks that they did not put AVCHD codec on F5 as well.... could take the idea from fs700, so that customers could get 240f now, before the soft updates would be released!
