F5: F5 and Optitek EF Adapter

Have any of you guys had any issues with EF lenses and the Optitek adapter on an F5 or F55? Specifically not achieving proper focus/witness marks and actual focus distance WAY off(having to focus much farther away than the actual object distance).

I had an F5 for a demo for a few days. I know it's a demo unit and there is always that variable, but my rep said that it is one that they use in classes and it's pretty well maintained(you don't want to send out gear for a demo that's not working properly). They sent it with the Sony PL adapter, the Optitek EF adapter and an IBE B4 to PL adapter. I don't have any PL lenses to use as a control on the camera, but I checked my Canon cine primes on my C300 and the witness marks were lining up with the measured/actual focus distance from the focal plane. The Canons, especially the wider focal lengths(suggesting it's a flange depth problem since back focus problems are more noticeable at wider focal lengths), were way off on the F5. Shooting an object at 5'3"(from the measured focal plane) with the 14mm I had to go all the way to the hard stop to achieve focus and an object at 2' I had to focus to 7'. The 24mm was almost as bad, having to focus to 14' to achieve focus on the same object that was 5'3" away and infinity for a target of 6'4". The 50, 85 and 135 were much closer,1"-5" discrepancy between witness marks and actual measured distance, but still off.

It's not my F5 and my Canon's perform as they should on my C300, so it's not a problem right now, but if I do get an F5 or F55 I would be using the Canon's on it, too, and I'm wondering if this is a possible issue I may run into, like possible manufacture variations in the adapters or certain combinations of individual copies of lenses, and adapters that may not play nicely.

uhhh...I was unaware that auto-focus was available with the Optitek and the F5. The "INIT" botton works only with the Optitron remote. AFAIK, there is not an auto-focus feature with the Optitek, alone. What you get when you press the INIT button, is a servo motor excursion from one end(infinity) to the other( min focus distance) as it tries to calibrate the lens. At that point, it returns to null, which is not the right focus position.

That is a very good approach with checking the lenses on the C300.
That tells you that- most likely the lenses are properly back focused.
There are two more variables remaining- the adapter height and the camera flange. You could possibly eliminate the camera flange by verifying collimated PL lenses with the Sony original PL adapter. That is not a 100% test but it's definitely worth trying.
As far as our adapters we check the height multiple times during QC procedure and the last time it is checked right before it's boxed up for shipping. There is very little chance that it is incorrect.
Couple of questions:
Which direction are the marks off?
is your 6ft mark correct when the subject is more than 6ft away or less than 6ft away?
Also make sure that the locating pin on the adapter drops into the corresponding notch in the lens- if it does not it will throw your back focus off quite a bit.
You can PM me and I'll help you to figure it out...
