F5: F5/55 arrived? Post it up here!

As we've heard about the slight trickle of a few cameras being delivered to owners, thought it was about time to start this thread. I put my deposit/order down on Nov.12 for a F5 and have been told "its expected by the end of March". Look forward to hearing from the new owners out there..

I should have mine within next few days. Already trying to figure out what "test footage" I'll attempt, since I won't be able to post any work.

Mine arrived 19th Feb and so far I'm very happy. Seems generally well screwed together and luckily I've got a few days to get to know it before it needs to start working for a living! Thought it most apt to try it straight out of the box with a RED lens first!

lol just don't let Red see that lens on there... all kidding a side... post some frame grabs when you can with the lens...

Congrats.. Paul, can you confirm if the SxS-1 cards work when XAVC is being used and if so up to what frame rate? Sony's recent literature says they work in MPEG (which I see your cam is set at) but curious if they can reliably do XAVC, even if only at 24p.
Thanks

Do you mind us asking who you purchased it from?

This is "official" but please do test something greater to those cards (at risk of having them spontaneously combust along with your shiny new camera)

Funny, that was one of the first thing I tried... When you format an SxS-1 card while the camera's set to XAVC you get a message in the viewfinder saying something like "memory card not guaranteed". However, mine seemed to work fine, and all the way up to 60P in 1920x1080 !!!

However, I haven't done a proper soak test of recording XAVC for an hour or more on paid work. Not sure I'd be confident to try that without SxS Pro's?

The camera was purchased from Top Teks who are great dealers on the north west side of London.

It likely works just fine. XAVC @60p is only about 200-240 mbits/sec. 32GB SxS-1 cards are rated up to 240mbits/sec. When the framerates abouve 60 show up though, you'll probably find the limit.

They'll certainly work great for 24/25p work.

Btw Paul, what's your serial? Also, what firmware version? The last camera I saw almost 2 weeks ago had v1.02

I don't really want to publish my serial online... but I'm happy that it's a very memorable one, (above 98 but below 124) !!!
Mine is version 1.0... and I hope they get a move on with releasing what they've got because I'm somewhat annoyed that the SCL-Z18x140 lens doesn't work until they've upgraded the firmware.

No worries, I just wanted to know the general range anyway.

I have a feeling there's going to be a 1.05 or 1.09 or something along pretty soon. They have to speed up those menus, too.

I know you don't want to hear it, but I'm kind of ok with them shipping with FW that needs work but is otherwise solid. The way I see it, I could wait without a camera for them to "finish", or have my camera and get some work done while I wait for other things.

The BIG issue of course is whether it's stable or not, and I know Sony has a different view (as opposed to another manu) of how important it is to let firmware out the door that might crash. I put my trust in Japanese engineers in that regard.

I know you're right Nate, it's just frustrating when it's a piece of Sony kit that they have already (and still) advertised as being compatible. For those of us that don't have the spare cash to buy large heavy PL mount zooms, it severely restricts what you can do with the camera. I recognise this will probably affect the F5 owner operators more than the F55 film boys!

Hello Paul, when you do get a firmware update to enable the SCL-Z18x140 how will you operate the zoom? Will the Microforce be compatible for instance?
Your new camera, is it the F5 or the F55?

Hi Peter, It's the poor man's F5. I've only ever used the zoom manually. Never really got on with the rocker switch on the F3. Apart from the fact that it was in totally the wrong place, I didn't like the lack of speed or ramping sensitivity in use.

I see Sony have started marketing an £800 zoom remote for this lens here:
http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/product/camcorderlenses/cbk-dcb01/overview

(another item they say is compatible with the F5 but isn't!)

I played with a prototype of this at IBC last year and thought it looked okay on the F3... no idea if the Microforce or anything else can be made compatible?

That is one cool looking camera, I must say. I still keep getting stuck on that top handle, however. Looks really cheap for a Spny pro product. Is it rigid or flimsy? Would you trust it for some crazy handling of the camera?

Actually, the top handle is very very sturdy. All metal. Bolts into the top of the camera with 4 screws. I would trust it to handle funky camera moves. I wouldn't trust my F3 handle. I had the F3 kitted out to about 22 pounds the other day and picked up the rig from the bottom just using the top handle for balance. I would not hesitate picking up a NewF by handle.

That's one weird zoom controller, though I guess it has other functions too.
It would be great if a firmware update and probably some different cabling would enable the Microforce.....Dream on
Yes the rocker switch is a really clumsy oddity on the F3, I've never used it with my lens, but on the rare occasions that I would want to use a zoom move I'd long for a better off-camera controller.
Stupid that you cannot use the lens with your new camera.
I hate all this complicated firmware /software/menu stuff that clouds our camera operating experiences these days, in fact I am seriously considering a radically simpler camera system rather than following the upward F progression.

That's good to know, thanks! Totally deceiving looking.

The prototype I tried at IBC had sockets for normal Canon & Fujinon zoom remotes, which is where I started to get more interested. From the specs it looks like these are still there on the production versions?
