F35 with gimbal

F35 and gimbal. We had few threads about this but nothing conclusive.

MacGregor started thread about F35 with Movi M10 but not much happened:http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?323462-Sony-F35-on-the-Movi-M10

This thread talked abour F35 + ronin: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?329628-F35-and-Gimbals Hunter did you ever test it with the newer longer sled for bigger cameras you ordered?

So anybody had success? F35 with light lens and screw on ND is not terribly heavy. You need no handle or anything. Battery can be on you and even recorder. But small 10-bit 422 recorder probably adds not much weight.

I feel like if someone had the money and resources to great the entire outer shell of the F35 using carbon fiber and stuff its guts into that, you could do a lot more with it.

The recently released Zhiyun Crane 3S has a claimed capacity of 6.5kg; that said, the size of the F35 might make things tricky.

DJI Ronin 1 did the job for us. No IF box, battery belt with power to Lemo. Heavy but doable. Had to hold it above shoulders for a few takes. Quite the workout. Shots came out smooth. Director was happy.

Very cool! How much F35 weighs in that? So Ronin MX will not do? What is main difference between MX and Ronin 1? Just cradle size? I think Ronin 1 is just the older model? Ronin MX I think would support the weight too.

*by the way is your video above missing sound?

I've got one, and can give it a try though I think the size of the F35 will be a bit too much for the Crane 3S.

Been piecing together an el-cheapo steadycam rig to do it instead (protip, get the real deal or equivalent/make friends with a steadi op and save yourself the hassle![only slightly kidding]), mixed results because understandably, the sled gets heavy fast!(I'm used to an FS700)

The Ronin 1 was the flagship variant until the Ronin 2 was released; the M and MX models were for smaller payloads similar to the Movi M5 and M10, 5 and 10 lbs respectively, alongside the top and bottom cage of the cradle for the MX.

Update: The F35 balances on the Crane 3S, sorta; The pan arm has to be weighted. The motors will complain a little in certain positions (some tilting), but holding it up, underslung and upside-down seem sorta okay.
I've got an IF box on top and a helios 44-2 on it, alongside 2x100g weights taped to the pan arm; Couldn't get the larger 35mm lens to balance at first. I'll probably try again later.

Other notes...Kinda a pain in the butt to mount; the cradle portion is maxed out(JUST barely fits the F35, some finagling), the tilt arm is MAYBE a mm from being maxed, the pan arm is maxed w/counterweights. Maybe having a more solid counterweight attachment might help with the motor vibration(usually caused by balance or tightening issues).
Total Weight: 20.5lbs (don't forget the recorder and battery solution/belt)
F35 Body only: 12lbs, with IF box and the lens maybe 13.5?

Very brave man. Is this just a bone stock Ronin 1 or any special accessories or custom work to fit the F35? I never used the Ronin but I would have thought it wouldn't work with a camera of the girth of the F35. How did you power the camera by Lemo? Thinner custom cable? How did you record?

Bone stock Ronin 1. No custom mods at all. The cheap Ronin. It’s tight in there but there is a way to balance it. Lemo to battery belt. Not sure what your question is about a thin cable. Recorded to Odyssey 7Q+ in prores... actually I lie... it was a Shogun we used that recorder only for the gimbal.

About the Lemo cable, the cable coming from the battery plate is pretty thick. At least with the official Sony plate. I would think a thick cable like that would make things harder for the gimbal. This is why I asked if you had a longer thinner cable made just for this. How long is your cable coming from the belt?

Shogun mounted on top of the gimbal? What was the weight of the whole gimbal set up? And the weight of the stripped F35 alone?

It's crazy you can do that with a F35. As I said in the other thread, would never be possible with a F65. The F35 is so flexible. The design whether ahead of its time or just coincidence, just keeps on giving and being adaptable to modern times. If it was married to the SRW1 as the F65 is to the SRR4 we would never be here.
