F35: F35 UHD upscale problem

As we all know, Sony CineAlta F35 has a 5K sensor in the body but only HD resolution video output. So the best solution to achieve high image quality is to upscale the HD footage to UHD/4K . In this case , I have watched several clips in the YouTube and Vimeo of F35 upscale video and the image quality is acceptable I think.

I have no experience in upscaling in the post production. What is the best method to upscaling in the post in FCP X software ? Another question is, upscaling the footage before editing or upscaling the final output video?

Please give me some advice and share your experience , thank you !:love4:

Upscaling HD footage is not going to generate any additional detail, that wasn't there in the first place. I think it's a total waste of time and energy.

I just download sereral clips of a UHD resolution documentary take by macgregor in the dessert. The image quality seems good. And I am quite interested in how to do it in the post.

Why do you feel you need to upscale? Like Grug said there is no magic. The F35 image looks great as it is. Most movies are still finished and released in 2K. If you want to upscale to satisfy a client who is asking for 4K I wouldn't do that as it's not honest. Otherwise there is absolutely no reason to upscale F35 footage IMO. It looks great just the way it is and the resolution makes no difference anyway. The huge majority of movies are still shot with the Alexa, which is not 4K and many DPs prefer it over all the rest exactly for that reason.

I think he used super-resolution plugin for upscale to 4K..

I bought it for BMMCC and using it @ final export and for youtube videos.. I am satisfied with result

I bet MacGregor didn’t use the plugin. He isn’t a fan of 4K per se, and the plugin is only 8 bit. The output may be 4K but that is just the export setting for Vimeo and YouTube so that their conversion to HD is better quality. He has posted this in the forum notes under his videos of Mauritania before. For me, coming from the DSLR world, theF35 has made me focus so much more on cinematography that I can see my work getting better and better. For the prices they are going, I’m gonna stick with mine even if no 4K.

I would use the plugin if I had a shot or two that needed stabilization or some cropping. That way I would be able to retain a little sharpness... but I wouldn’t export all the dailies to 4K 8 bit. Seems overkill, but again, I don’t shoot for Netflix, so it’s not a concern for me.

Jack,

What you should do is try and find some scalers that let you pick the algorithm used when scaling ie. Nearest Neighbor; Bilinear; Bicubic; Bicubic Smoother; Bicubic Sharper as this will yield different types of results. General scalers are just not the same, who knows what method FCPx or Premiere use natively but you can also add just a hint of sharpness to the footage after you scale up, it will improve it a bit.

I think McGregors plugin was a good bet, I can't remember if they only made it for windows not mac, or vice versa but perhaps by now its available for both.
