F35: F35 to silmulate film as much as I could -

This whole Digital Bolex thing has launched me on another crusade - to try to take footage from the f35 and make it seem organic as I can - and in the natural darkness of NYC at night - let me know thoughts - I still think I want to test out Mr. Bolex and see how he feels too.

very nice, I think it's far more organic than the A7S night videos you made a few months ago Ed, easy to compare to that because they are a similar style. It's really hard to judge night footage through web compression. My favorite F35 shot was at night by a fireside right on the edge of the camera, on my monitor playback from Hyperdeck the shot looked incredible, once I put it on youtube it was a black mush loosing all the fine detail. In any case I like what you have done.

Care to share the post workflow? Also what does your handheld rig look like you really are able to wipe that thing around?

How did you achieve the reflection in this frame? It's part of a very interesting flare that looks like a roll of film running out.

Very nice but it would be nicer to see a cut that is more than 2 seconds long. This is very frustrating to watch for me and does nothing for image/camera evaluation.

Also, is that noise in the lower 15% from the F35 or more vimeo compression and film fx?

The F35 has the most wonderful noise/grain to it - but I find anything lower than blu-ray resolution destroys it completely and even at that compression it can get lost

I'll enable a download.
Yes the shots are very quick because it's a mood film too - not just a tech demo. trying to caputre some kind of rhythm with the music and night and trying to simulate a good night out in NYC

don't worry there are shots that hold much longer - all of them do - I'm just trying to do it to show that I do fashiony stuff

I regraded this and I dedicate this to my new online friend, Shoot56 - who inspires me every day. Wait, no, he's not that nice.
This is to Kassim who told me about some different film print emulations and I like it better. More natural skin tones

thanks - I shot way underexposed

next time if I shoot at night with too slow of a set of lenses I need to shoot at 444 RGB that will give more information to make a cleaner grade - I think that would have helped in the grade.

Good idea Ed - I also found it is important to resist the temptation to increase the gain in camera during darker scenes. I found better results pushing in post than in camera. You can open the shutter just a little (I think 210 degrees or so) without it being noticeable, if your subject isn't moving. Gives you just a bit more.

I'm not into opening up the shutter - I think Michael Mann's Collateral scared me :)

it's incredible how much you can raise luma with 4:4:4 - it blows my mind away.

But I should do a test.

Believe me I am incredibly anti-open shutter, but 210 is not very noticeable. I'm not fond of raising gain, opening the shutter or going beyond T2, but when you need to, you need to.
