F35 noise issue with daylight filter

Obviously loving the F35, so much actually I just bought a 2nd one on ebay. I figured it's cheaper than getting it repaired if the first one goes down with the camera you know well it's not that old of a camera but just in case.

Anyway, one issue I'm having with it is noticing that shooting with 5600cc filter adds quite a bit of noise to the image overall that I can't really correct out that easily - its there in the image.

don't get me wrong, the grain structure of the CCD chip is incredibly like film grain - but I do want to potentially give people the option to not have to deal with this I guess as everyone is used to the cleanness out of the Alexa - even the noise on the Red MX is cleaner.

Are you guys also noticing this? Maybe my recording is doing this. I need to test recording out 3200 with a 85 filter to see noise issues.

Of course I was shooting daylight interiors and didn't have the most light to work with so I chose the 5600cc instead of 3200 with the 85 filter.

And of course I black balance every morning before shooting.

Art Adams seems to think the 5600k filter on the camera is less noisy than the 3200 with the 85 filter but I think its time I do a test.

Your own test will for sure bring you the best conclusions. Art Adams says it's cleaner at 5600. My only concern would be having to deal with one more filter.
If you're concern about too much noise, why not rating the camera at 200-250ISO? You'll lose one stop in the highlights but footage is so much cleaner. Similar to the difference between 1600 and 800 in the Alexa, which is quite a step in noise levels and you wouldn't expect that much difference.
Or disable extended D-range, you'll lose a bit of DR but the footage will have also less noise.

Have people forgotten how grainy film telecines were? BTW, I saw the director's cut of your Dove commercial and they added tons of film grain on that. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Oh, a couple more things:

444 shows less noise than 422, if you have the chance of recording 444 and are worried about noise do it.
There a noise reducer menu in the camera, which frankly, I've never had any interest playing with.
When I tried the 80 filter I got footage that was too blue, so I gave up on that route. If I had a 80B around I'd give it a try, but I'm in the middle of nowhere here and no access to pro filters.

Awesome Miguel thanks for the ideas - extended d range yes I should test that out.

Also 444 vs 422 I will try.

and of course rating it at 200

good tricks - yes the Dove thing tons of grain on the end of it - thanks about that - yes I wish I had the f35 at the time to shoot that with - the red mx is so nasty at clipping highlights - it looks like the hvx200 in how it handles it and we were on the 3rd floor and had a crew of three people and no budget so there was no way to get exposure where we wanted it . But what can you do :)

I've been under exposing it sometimes to add even more grain, I dig it but can see where you want the cleaner option- I bet rating it a stop slower will solve it.

That ad was made for the F35. Lots of skintones, natural lit portraits and lots of higlights in the background...
