F35: F35 and PIX-E7?

Hey guys,

Has anyone tried pairing their F35 with the new Video Devices PIX-E7 yet?

The PIX-E7 has two SDI inputs, and their PIX240 supports the 12-bit feed from the camera if you use a multiplexer to get the signal into 3G-SDI, so I'm wondering if the PIX-E7 can take the dual-link feed directly from the camera and offer the same 12-bit ProRes4444 recording for 25fps, and 10-bit 4:2:2 for 50fps (without the added complexity of a multiplexer)?

Cheers,

Mark

Mark, I'm wanting to know the answer to this too, more precisely to the F23 - which should be the same in this regard. Did you find out about compatibility?

Hey Rick,

The answer from Video Devices was 'no bueno' unfortunately. The new recorders have no dual-link recording functionality to accept the signal off the camera. So you'd only be able to record a 10-bit 422 signal from the camera (and only up to 30fps - rather than 50fps with a dual-link recorder).

You could use an SDI multiplexer to convert the dual-link signal from the cameras into a 3G-SDI feed, and then the PIX recorders could get everything from them (12-bit 4:4:4 and 50fps), but you'd have to deal with the extra cabling and power requirements of having the additional box on the camera.

It's the reason I think the Odyssey7Q remains the best option with the F35/F23 - gives you everything the camera has to give, in the simplest possible setup.

Hope that helps,

Mark

The Aja LUT box seems to be the only tested method to combine the single link cables into one 3g SDI, there might be other, this is the only one I've seen proven to work. With the Aja LUT box you do open a lot more doors to the 12-bit recording possibility.

Convergent Design went the extra mile to do the work for the F35 12-bit signal. It is a strange form of sonyPsF split over the 2 cables. Unless it's about savings $$, pairing the F35 is 7Q is no brainer. Also all the 7Q+'s out there have made the used 7Q's very reasonable used.

There's a F35 on eBay for $3900 but with no IF box so no dual outputs obviously. It still puts out 10 bit 4:2:2, correct?

yeah but only at 24p/25p/30p or 50i if you were so inclined.
the bigger problem is powering it to the weird sony lemo power cable.

i cant quite remember the specifics so someone else might chime in. but i think there was only one battery plate made specifically for it and it was a gold mount. and they were expensive. so if you wanted Vmount you'd have to make your own and wire it. something like that.

it was just esier to go through the IF box
