F3 & C 300 commercial

Here's the final version of the commercial for Scotia iTrade that I shot with the Sony F3 and the pre production model of the Canon C 300 at the end of November. All the interviews except the ones in the restaurant were F3. The b-roll type shots and the 2 interviews in the restaurant were C 300

Its airing nationally in Canada. I did not sit in on the final grade, but gave my suggestions to the production company. We shot in s log with the F3 to the Nanoflash (What I had available) and Canon log to the internal CF cards.

Used Canon 24-70 2.8 L, 70-200 2.8L on the C 300 and Digioptical 18-50 T2.8, and Red 50-150 T2.8 on the F3.

Well, I think that grading looked awful but that has nothing to do with how it was shot. The graphics also ruined the shots from an estethic point of view and makes it hard to judge how the actual footage is.

You can't always please everyone. At the end of the day, this is what the production company, agency and their clients wanted. They are very happy with the final product and that's the main thing. I'm pleased with how the footage turned out and mixing the two cameras without any lead time to test.

Facetone looks a bit red to me in the f3 shots.
Not possible to judge any difference between the cameras since shots are all different. Then you need to shoot the same picture.
But doubt the difference will be much.....

Thats funny , I thought the same thing. Although I wouldn't say awful. just not very appealing to my taste. The Canon does looks really nice though, it has such a warm look to it here. Don't get me wrong , I also really like the sony f3, but the skin tones look a bit purple-ish here. This is nice work shooting and lighting wise, I wasn't crazy about the graphics either, But hey, apperantly the client liked it, and thats all that matters in the end.

The Canon footage looks way too grainy for my tastes, and the F3 footage looks clean and sharp, but I dislike the ridiculous red-tinted skintones.

Good job! commercials are always tricky because of the clients taste. I wondered what sort of detail levels you had in the camera's.
footage looks very sharp on my computer.
And if you saw a difference between Sony and Canon there.

This isn't supposed to be a film guys, it's basically a short infomercial, of course it is going to have flashy graphics everywhere. For what it was I thought it worked. Very nice job. Now some of that acting on the other hand... lol. But once again it's all part of the infomercial feel.

It's easy to sit at home and get overly critical of others work. For this type of job and the clients involved, it looked more than acceptable to me. Nice job Nigel. When you consider what either of these two camera's cost, and the quality a good operator can achieve, it's amazing. Not long ago we were paying more for camera's that were totally pants by comparison!

Fantastic Nigel, and thanks for posting the earlier footage while you were shooting - when you got the pre-production model.
Looks like a lot of cooks in the kitchen for this one!

I did notice some of the F3 footage was magenta. Did you use a diva light dimmed down, or an LED? Not all the F3 footage was pinkish though.

You guys are complaining about the things that are just personal taste. The only guy that was really, really red was the guy by the window. He probably just started as pink (a lot of Irish have pink skin and 'Scotia' as in Nova Scotia has a ton of Irish decendants) then the pink was enhanced when they tried to saturate the colors. It was a grading mistake.

Anyway, the footage cuts together well, but in reality they were both 8 bit recordings of talking heads. They should be really close.

Ha, this is so funny, my company (Q Media) has been doing all the Scotia iTrade tutorial videos for the last couple of years, we're getting ready to do another set soon.

This was one of the videos we saw during our research phase. No idea it was shot by you Nigel! Cheers man!

Nigel you're a genius at getting these pre-production cams!

Hi!
The work was great, but these forums are about discussing things so if you post your clip be prepared to face the critics. Just remember to be a little bit polite.....:)
