F3 + aphatron + SDI A problem?

I'm testing the Alphatron on an F3 And while I like the picture a great deal when coming out of the SDI monitor out, It looks terrible out of the SDI A . Like 1/2 resolution or something. I'm looking at 1080 23.98P. Settings don't seem to matter whether I have it on Psf or pulldown. my settings as usual 1.5 G YPrPb + Video, and the image from both outputs looks identical on a TV Logic 5.6".

Looks fine in HDMI and it looks fine when I switch to 1080 29.97. So its a 24P problem.

What gives ?

Does the image look that way as a result of panning? I found that the Alphatron accentuated whatever comes out of the F3, so when panning in 24P you can see the flickering but not in 60i. I use it out of SDI A as well. You're right. It's an awesome picture but now I see it as 'standard.' Remember how amazing it was when we got rid of our old television sets and replaced them with 42" plasma or LCD screens. After a while they all look the same as well.

What I saw had nothing to do with panning - the image just looked very low res.
Are you telling me that yours looks fine at 24P from the SDIA out?

I was a bit vague with my reply. Sorry! I've found the quality of the image looks better at 60i than at 24p. I don't know why and I can't explain it. I use 75oHm BNC cables as recommended for this camera but that probably isn't the cause of your problem. I would suggest plugging the cable into the standard SDI out and compare the quality. You know, I didn't realise how ordinary the view finder was on the F3 until I started using the Alphatron. It's a great view finder, so I would pursue it a bit further to find where the bad connection is.

It sounds like you're confirming what I see at 24P. It is fine out of the standard SDI monitor out even at 24P.

i don't see a difference. however, in playing around with it i discovered that i can't feed hdmi to the alphatron.

edit; my hdmi issue seems unrelated to the alphatron. i don't seem able to get hdmi out of the f3.

Is your SDI A/B set for 1.5g 422 or 1.5g 422 S log? Otherwise, you're only getting a partial signal.

1.5g 422.
What difference should that make?

Re HDMI - If your at 24P you cannoy be on PSF.
To switch the alfatron input hold down the wheel and the menu button at the same time. ( took me an hour and half to figure that out)

:p thanks, took me about the same, going through the alpha and the f3, but i just figured out hdmi wants a pull-down for 24p.

i'll probably never use it, but i'd rather have figured it out now than be stuck on set.

Ned,
I misinterpreted and thought you were talking about Slog. Yes I was on 1.5g 4:2:2 though not sLog. So no one so far has any explanation or any hard confirmation that this is normal.
Anybody else out there with an Alfatron want to take a look?
My biggest concern here is that I would typically use this port for an external recorder and am troubled that Alfatron does not see a normal picture.
Of course equally confused that it seemed to look fine on a TV Logic.

Anybody else checking?

I don't have an Alphatron but i do find that very strange since I have never experienced any difference between SDI A and the regular SDI port. I tend to use SDI A to the Pix240 because I know that it is clean SDI signal.

Yes extremely strange to me and disturbing. I could not figure it out. Why didn't the problem appear on the TV Logic? Why should an Alfatron and a TV Logic behave differently to an SDI signal? Maybe I just couldn't see the problem on the TV Logic but it was soooo obvious on the Alfatron.
