F3: F3 And Cinedeck THAW Fund Charity Shoot

I haven't posted here in a while. But I have been lurking and keeping an eye on everyone.
For 2 years now my company Vision Bridge Media, LLC has been involved with a local charity here in Michigan that helps people who find themselves in a situation where they may not be able to pay their utility bills particularly their heat bill. It goes without saying that heat is a must have through our winter months here.
THAW (The Heat And Warmth fund) helps people from all walks of life throughout our entire state not just southeastern MI.
The Producer for these videos contacted me with the news that we were going to do more for THAW this year. Knowing how much THAW does and wanting to take part in this again, I made sure to set the dates in stone on my calendar.

I have a RED Epic and a Sony F3 that I made available for them to pick their format.
The decision was made to use the Sony F3 which was then recorded SLog 10 bit 444 to the Cinedeck using the popular 4444 Prores codec.
The glass that our Director of Photography chose was my Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42. Beside the fact that it is great looking lens this gave us a lot of flexibility to vary the shot size quickly during the interviews.
I also handled the sound responsibilities using a Sound Devices 442 mixer and a Sennheiser 416 microphone and data management that I used my Data Wrangler by 1 Beyond.
Cinedeck really made the data management easy. I set up the recorder with a project name and then inside the project the "scenes" were our subjects names. When we finished our first half of the day I took the SSD to the Wrangler and downloaded the footage simultaneously to 3 separate drives. Having multiple SSDs I loaded a new drive into the Cinedeck for the second half of our day now there are four copies of our footage.
That is pretty secure data.
Post then opened up the project and everything was organized by name of our participants this made it quick and easy for them.
On the Subject of post production I was not involved so I don't have the info on their workflow or how they got to the look that was decided on.
We did know that it was going to be B&W so I set up my monitors accordingly for the DP. I kept my tech monitor in color. This made it easier for me to make sure levels were good.

This job at the end of the day is one that even though your energy is spent you still feel like you didn't do enough to help these folks.

I hope that you all find these interesting and go you little Sony F3! GO!

There are more so check them out if you care too.

Hey I realize that I am just preaching to choir here but the Sony F3 IMHO is truly a very underrated camera available for production. It gets lost and passed over too many times when it is completely the right camera both visually and budget wise for the job.

Best Regards,

Very nice.

That zoom makes for a faster workflow, but I would have probably gone with fast primes with a razor-thin dof and moved the key around for a little more drama and a touch less fill.

But that's me. I love my F3....great camera.

Good job. Thanks for sharing.
