F23?

Was the F23 essentially a s16 version of the F35 or is it an entirely different animal?
Has anyone shot with this camera? If I remember correctly some or all of Alive in Wonderland was shot on the F23.

thanks

Hi Harry

Depending on how you look at it, the F23 was developed either earlier than or simultaneously to the F35.

The vast majority of the camera's internals are IDENTICAL between the two. The F23 has an extremely high quality 2/3" 3 CCD 1080P arrangement, which was an evolution of the F900's optics.

F23s did shoot a few notable films, including portions of Avatar. It was largely replaced by F35s for most people who wanted something that could use standard 35mm PL mount lenses. Apparently a few are still in service because there are distinct advantages of the 2/3" 3 CCD layout for certain applications (eg. green screen).

I never shot with one, came close to it. The vast majority of pitfalls/issues that are not related to imaging are relevant to the F23. Ie. same power requirements, same recorder, etc...

It was possible to upgrade an F23 to an F35 - you replaced the optical block. The cameras were designed from the outset to do that.

The Sony SRW9000 was effectively an F23 in one box - they also had an "F35 equivalent" in the SRW-9000PL. There were plans for you to be able to upgrade not just the sensor, but the recorder - replacing the tape deck with memory cards. It never happened though - possibly due in part to the fact the cameras were never that popular.

The F23 will also go to 60FPS, whereas the F35 will only go to 50FPS (it can shoot in a 60FPS mode, but only 50 genuine frames per second)

^^^ Correct Steve, more than likely left in because nearly all 2/3" CCD designs from Sony had a filter wheel so it would have been more effort to put them in than take them out.
