Eye Black Out Effect

Hey everyone,

I guess it is time I finally put something up. I'm currently working on a film where I have to transform some girls eyes into solid black glass type eyes. This is a test I did today. In the film it will be cut much differently but can you guys tell me if the effect looks half way descent.

Black Out

sorry man, i'm not diggin it. Completely looks like you just faded something in from microsoft paint. I say somehow make her pupils grow larger and yet still hold some detail in the eyes. Also... it will look alot better if the subject is shot at a wider angle (further away from the camera) That way you won't see so much "digital" detail and it'll look more natural... that is what you want right?

Also, go watch the exorcism of emily rose... i just saw it for the second time. It has some really good eye shots in that movie (about 6 or 7 creepy shots) It'll be great inspiration for what your trying to do.

Looked pretty fair, but it would probably look a lot better from the distance ... having them THAT black, almost gave a plastic look, not organic. Go for some distance, and perhaps work with opacity JUST a hair to blend better as well.

Actually Envision...I was going for a plastic look. I'm trying to make her eyes look like the eyes of a stuffed animal.

I appreciate your comments, guys. I'll try it from a distance and see if that works a bit better. I wish I had a program like after effects to do that. All I have is Vegas. I masked the eyes out and then used images of black pearls to give it that shine. Any other suggestions on what tools I should use to make this effect better?

Thanks guys.

Ah, if plastic's what you were going for then you were nearly dead on. Images of black pears ... I was wondering how you got that shine. In Vegas, with the bezier mask I assume you're using, you may want to play with the feather JUST A HAIR so it doesn't look so stark around the edges ... my only thought.

looks cool but the edge are too sharp and make it look fake. Try to blend the edges a bit more into the eye. Also, the transition should be a bit more organic, at the moment it look a bit too CG. Nice job though. Better than most I've seen. Good luck and keep making it happen!!!

Hellooooo? That's what my comment was talking about ... blending the edges with the feathering tool. You agree with Alex ... what about Envision?! Sheesh! :)

thanks guys. I'll keep working on it. Sometimes I really wished I had after effects or someone who can do it for me.

I tried this for my short film I did just recently..and I saw this post so..I gave it a shot. heres the file.

i use vegas too. what I did was create two layers of the same video. On the first layer I masked out the eyeballs, feathered it 34% and added bump map, and set the shininess and bump to 100% each, then a sharpen effect.

2nd layer I added gradient map and set the black up 100% to make it gritty, add color corrector to give a pale look. I guess its all of what you are trying to go for, and what the subject is doing at the time. In my movie, we got people running around with their eyes masked out hehe. I think on close-ups like this one, its kinda risky because theres always somebody looking for the "fakeness". I dont care personally because as long its convincing enough. I wouldn't concentrate just on the eyes but the overall picture, I would cc it to the so that it looks good enough. hope this helps!

The 3D rendering on the actual black out graphic just isn't believable. It looks like a sample 3d graphic you get with whatever prog you used.

Good start though.

Hiro, I like the graininess you added to the clip. Thanks for doing that. I know alot of people aren't convinced with a shot like that though.

The purpose of the shot is to have this girls eyes transform into the eyes of a stuffed animal. I think I'm going to try and go with a wider angle, but because of what is happening and how the story progresses, I think it would be better to have a close up on her eyes. If anyone has any other suggestions on what programs I should use or what else I should do. This is a very important effect for my short film.

Thanks.
