F3: Extreme posterisation of video files?

Hi guys,

Just had a client send us back a screencap displaying some extreme posterisation:

I can't see this on my end (or find any way to recreate the artifacting), and the marketing company can't either, just the client. Any ideas as to what might be causing the issue?

The video is an h.264 encode out of FCP X.

Cheers

You'd have to know a lot more about the post process on this as that's undoubtedly the culprit. I assume its not on the original. You've provided virtually no information here .

H.264 is processor intensive playing those files on a slower processor will cause that type of behavior.

He says that it doesn't look like that on his end, nor on the marketing companies end, only the end client. Right there says it's not the post process.

It's the client. You have to make it stupid simple for people. I always send a MOV and WMV with instructions that the mov is for Mac users, the WMV is for PC users. Never have problems because those are playable on anything. Mp4 h264 can wreak havoc on older pcs but I tell them those are really only for uploading to sites like youtube. Just get in the habit of sending those three files with instructions, plus a master copy in Prores or DNxHD or uncompressed, and you won't ever have it happen again. :)

I didn't mean to limit the post process to what left your facility, but rather all the way up to the final user. Without more information its pretty hard to figure out what happened or to fix it.

I agree, but it's the only "post process" one can do to fix this is render it out into a different file format or tell the client to watch it in something else.

I had some severe banding in a clip I rendered out one time that was only seen in VLC and nothing else.
