Extreme BW footage

Testing out some extreme styes my friend and i tested out this BW set-up. Besicaly it's a raw fooatge desaturated to BW and then pushed really really hard (so the curves resemble really step slope) -- you end up getting pure blacks and pure whites with very little in between. What suprised me was analog grain found in the fooatge. When pushed that hard the fooatge reveals film-like grain that's very organic and pleasing to the eye:

I wasn't blown away by it...but I think with the right story it could be a very effective look.

I thought the look was awesome. And I do think it had a very nice grain to it that gave it a film like look. The lighting also really fit the desaturated image. This type of experimentation is great. I agree that it would work extremely well with a specific type of story. Like noir or crime or maybe experimental.

Wow, what a great look. It has an old B&W archival footage feel.

I'll definately keep that trick in the toolbox. Very cool and thanks for sharing.

Very standard setting on DVX. Nothing fancy what i found out is that with such "image degradation" you can get away with a lot. MiniDV's weaknesses become its strenght all the sudent you don't have to be scared of wise shots that much. Moreover underexposing becomes desirable (think of using Mini35 in low light situations!).

So you just took your dvx out of the box and used the setting that were on it? lol..or just don't wanna share the settings :kali:

It sounds like you used regular camera settings but did the "look" totally in post. Is this correct? Which "regular" settings did you use: i or p or ???

Do you have a larger size clip? It looks great, but so does most stuff when it's small.

Is that Sony Vegas you are using?
I am gonna have to try this look out. The colors just don't get in the way in the black n white shot. It really leaves you to less judgement and probably helps the story.
