extracting frames from 24p (not advanced)

I am in the process of editing a documentary shot in 24p mode (not advanced). We will be projecting on video, but not likely to be blowing up to film. is there a way to extract frames from straight 24p footage, to make it true 24p? If so, can we send it to a post facility to do it once we are finished editing- or will this change our cut too much? Is it even worth it? The footage looks phenomenal as it is- will it really be that much better to make it worth the hassle? finally, if there is a chance at all to go to film, will we need to do it?

You can extract normal pulldown before editing if you want either via Cinema Tools or DV Filmmaker or directly during capture over FireWire using the latest Avid Xpress Pro.

You can always extract pulldown after the fact but the continuous cadence will be broken at all the edit points. Specialized boxes such as the Teranex can do a "cadence correction" to create a 24p master from such sources but it more expensive that just doing it yourself at the beginning of the process.

I thought I read somewhere on this forum that DVFilmmaker did a reverse telecine after the edit, but I am not sure. I would need to go their site and read up on it.

The issue with doing it after the fact is that some edits will be made up of "C" frame for example that consist of two different frames actions of action. In these cases, there is one field of action that needs to get compensated for reducing the vertical resolution by half for those frames.

If all the material is shot 24fps, I always edit at native 24 since it is easy enough to make a NTSC master by hitting play (and the system inserts a continuous 2:3 pulldown) or export as frames for a film out if needed downstream - you get both deliverables.
