External recorders for the AF100 any info please :)

No on-screen stuff is recorded externally if you have the video out OSD menu item set to "off".

Some recorders add their own signal to the output to show it is recording. As an example, the NanoFlash can take the SDI input from the camera and output an HDMI signal to your HDMI EVF, but it will overlay a red line on the output when it is recording. Which sounds exactly like what you want, right?

I got my hands on a Nano for a shoot the other day. Its the perfect size but its just a bit to pricey for my tastes. Worked really well though so I definitely get it if I could find one for the right price but even second hand they are still going for a lot.

Any one know what happens when you record off speed like 50 frames p/sec? Does the external recorder record 25 just with a higher shutter speed? I know it doesn't record the higher frame rate, just unsure what it does record.

Currently leaning towards the Hyperdeck shuttle due to price and future use ie 10 bit, hdmi & sdi and the ability to use ssd, which I think will become more common in many applications. That said they all look good bar the kipro which just seems too big and a bit problematic.

its the first big investment I've been excited about since my Voigtlander 25mm
why is no hdmi a downside?

The AF-100 has both SDI and HDMI out but that limits its use with cameras that only have HDMI out.
If you dont have SDI out then a converter is necessary to use the Blade. That adds another battery and expense.
Same goes for the Ninja 2. It has HDMI but no SDI. Again the converter must be used. I wish the Blade had both. If it did I would have bought it. I ended up getting a good deal on there Ninja 2 for the C100 since it has a tight ingratiation with that camera and it's pretty cheap in price so I'm okay with the limitations but at $1300 I would want both in a recorder. Now we are getting into a different price point and the Convergent Design Odyssey7 looks better at $1299. The panel is fricken amazing but it might be to big for some applications. It has both SDI and HDMI and a whole lot more. So many choices......

Thanks for pointing out the Odyssey, it does look nice but yeah - a little too big for my needs,
Is a lack of SDI inputs a DSLR specific problem?

Definitely a DSLR issue, but also cameras like the Canon C100 don't have SDI. The HDMI out is uncompressed 8bit. Hard to know what the next camera you will have or want to use will have so having a recorder with both options is a good thing and in the long run could save you money. It sucks when you want to move to an different camera and find that expensive pieces of kit wont work with it.

Hey guys, just thought id chip in as a little concerned. Started thinking that the original avchd files looked better than my samurais high pro res files, when i compare and zoom in 400 percent the mts files appear less jagged. Any ideas? Here are two images, don't know if you can zoom in?

Also, when using 24psf via the SDI on the AF100 the HDMI out is disabled so a directors monitor is going to need to come from somewhere as well as your own EVF/monitor for the focus puller or camera op for framing; having HDMI conversion and pass through really helps with the various budgets you may work on. With my AF100 setup i need the SDI to HDMI conversion passthrough of the Hyperdeck Shuttle to enabled my SmallHD DP4 and the Directors monitor to run while 24 psf is being captured via the SDI.

To be honest, in the age of pocketable raw recording, 5DMk3 raw recording via a hack and $4000 4k global shutter cameras it really isn't much to ask for a HDMI in/out as well as SDI on a $1300 recorder?

Stop making sense. That's just going to get you into trouble.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

From the I f@#ed up files.
Today I shot a review for the Zacuto C-Shooter rig and decided to use my new Ninja 2 with my AF-100. This was the first time I have used an external recorder with the AF-100 so I wanted to test it out. I'm not a fan of external recorders but I got a good deal on the Ninja so I went for it.
I wish it would trigger recording with HDMI but it doesn't. The cool thing is I triggered the camera with the remote. How often do you use that! and had the Ninja on a long super skiny HDMI cable on the table so I just started recording the Ninja manually. It worked very well since I could see what the shot looked like and review the take without getting up. I was happy to double record because you never know if you need the back up right?.

Since I was basically shooting myself I thought this setup worked pretty well except for one minor and fatel problem. The camera was set for 24P and the Ninja was set for 29.97. Grrrr! Oh well. At least I double rolled! The Ninja is a cool recorder if you use it right. I swear sometimes I need to read the fricken directions!!! HaHa!

The Samurai Blade looks to be a real winner. A full-featured recorder/monitor at the same price as a comparable monitor. What's not to like?

As far as 24psf disabling the AF100's HDMI output, it's not an issue with a Samurai, as its 3:2 mode works great and I can leave 24psf turned off.

Any one have any ideas why the samurai footage from the previous post looks more jagged/rough up close than the mts files? Surely the mts files should be better resolution etc?

As for the sample I cant see much of a difference other than the bottom image looks a little brighter. If your not happy with the external recorders image quality go back and check all the settings and make sure they are right then shoot a tighter shot of something and run a few tests.

Thanks I'll have to recheck everything and do some tests. Just wanted to ask a general questions before posting an individual post about this for other samurai users, but has anyone had the issue where the samurai records multiple broken up files (often only a second - to five seconds long) whilst shooting in high pro res mode? I've even caught it on occasion "ghost recording" on and off whilst I wasnt even pressing the camera or any buttons, and when trying to recreated I can't repeat it. I found a forum post about it here http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=samurai+records+multiple+files&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CD4QFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.atomos.com%2Farchive%2Findex.php%2Ft-1858.html&ei=AG2uUfKtJ7LL0AXttIGoDQ&usg=AFQjCNFQXAvVZgHglBG_sRrarRBmcxrPxQ

However this and another Red forum discussing it was never really resolved and nothing has been further added by Atomos. I'm going to try recording via the samurai manually tomorrow instead of relying on the hd sdi panasonic trigger, but still a little peeved that after spending all this money this glitch keeps happening. (Updated the firmware, no issues with the hd sdi cable etc and I'm using an authorised SSD).

Any other users experience this multiple file issue? If so any tips? At my wits ends with the amount of files I'm getting and having to sift through.

Thanks Taras

We have seen an issue (2x) where the Samurai will record an additional file of the scene as a still frame . Never seen your issue though.
Communicate your issue to Atomos.

Latest firmware upgrade and we are issue free.

It sounds like you just have your Samurai time code settings wrong.

You neglected to say which version of firmware you're using.
