External Recorder Question

I am just curious...I have a Black Magic Hyperdeck Shuttle for my AF100 and I don't have the connector for the SDI cable that came with it to adapt to the terminal behind the shuttle. I keep hearing how the SDI connection is most secure in active environments but if my HDMI connection is reliable is there much difference in the quality of HDMI VS SDI should the connection hold?

Dear Dre,

HD-SDI and HDMI can transmit the same quality video, as a general rule.

This does depend on certain factors, mainly the camers implementation of HD-SDI and HDMI.

There are different versions of HD-SDI and HDMI.

HD-SDI 1.485 Ghz - 1.5 G
HD-SDI 1.485 Ghz - 1.5 G Dual Link

HD-SDI 2.97 Ghz - 3 G
HD-SDI 2.97 Ghz - 3 G Dual Link

and even faster versions are being developed.

And there are many different versions of HDMI.

Thus, if a camera can output the same data over both outputs, then the quality at the receiving end, using proper cables within the normal limitations of each, then the quality can be exactly the same.

Respectfully,

"Most secure in active environments" term is probably about the physical connection, not the quality of transmission. SDI cables have a positive lock: you plug in the cable, turn the tip and it's locked to the socket. This kind of physical connection prevents the cable to get loose accidentally when people are moving around on a busy set or whatever.

Also, the SDI type connector is physically much stronger and can take abuse compared to the HDMI connector.

24psf disables the HDMI on the AF100 right? Can only grab that via SDI? Other than that SDI feeds can be transmitted over greater distances than HDMI, I've had close to 80 meters on the SDI and I've heard of more via boosters which the Hyperdeck can be used for

So what I am gathering is that if I shoot 24fps (WHICH IS ALL I SHOOT) I can NOT use the HDMI connection as it will shut down the HDMI? GREAT! And thanks Dan...I had my heart SET on the Convergent Design but my pockets at this time limited my dreams...lol. But one day hopefully!

Not necessarily. I plucked this quote from a posting by Barry Green in the AF100 stickies.

"1. Wondering why some certain function isn't working? Some features disable other features, and one of the most notable of those is having the HD-SDI 24PsF output set to ON. I strongly recommend to everyone to leave 24PsF set to "off" unless they know exactly what they're doing. It can disable the HDMI output, it disables variable frame rates, and it disables autofocus, so lots of people are going to be scratching their heads as to why all these functions quit working on their cameras, when in reality all they have to do is turn 24PsF to "off" and all that stuff comes back."

Yes, you can use HDMI with 24p. As Inveresk points out, you'll have to turn off 24PsF, but that shouldn't matter because that's only relevant to HD-SDI. The HDMI will work the same way for 24p no matter what -- 2:3 pulldown will be inserted. So if you're trying to record the HDMI output, you would ideally have a recorder that can strip out 2:3 pulldown.

Since your Shuttle supports SDI, I'd definitely unquestionably recommend trying to use that connector, so get whatever adapter it needs but yes, use SDI whenever you can.

Barry what is the advantage of 24psf over 24p via 60i, just for Dres benefit
