External recorder pre-amps vs. camcorder pre-amps?

For those of you who have used camcorders with built in XLR ports, how do the pre-amps compare with the Tascam DR-100 or Zoom H4n? I'm curious because I've only used low end camcorders with XLR adapters which introduce hiss.
