External recorder for DVX200

Hallo

i am looking for an external recorder for my DVX200.

would you recommend an Atomos Ninja Flame, or is there something even better for the budget of a Flame?

thanks

Ulf

I have a Video Devices PIX-E5 4K Recorder Monitor and am very pleased with it, I use it with a DVX200 and my GH4 Cameras.

I have the ninja assassin, and I love it. The flame is a more robust version with a much brighter screen and dual battery holder. Looks good to me. Video Devices make great recorders as well.

I am using the Atomos Shogun flame with DVX 200 but also with Dslr. That's why I went with the Shogun flame which gives you much better sound recording for Dslr through its breakout XLR connector module. The Ninja flame and the Shogun flame have the same screen which is phenomenal. It really is bright enough to see it properly in bright daylight. That's why I also love using it for macro stills photography. The interface is intuitive, recording to hard disc is convenient but it is quite big and much too expensive. But then they all are.

Just posted this in another thread--didn't want you to miss it.
I have the Atomos Flame. I've tested the three flavors of ProRes and their varying file-size differences and 10 bit vs 8. I have not done green screen work yet with 10bit, so I can't speak to that.
I would agree that the difference between 8bit and 10bit for *most* work isn't much to cheer about. I could see the difference, yes, but again--I wasn't doing backflips. It was interesting..and yes I did appreciate having the option.
However----I love the Atomos Flame. Recording to SSD and editing straight off that instead of having to copy off to another drive is great. I wouldn't use that workflow with a ton of footage, but for some smaller quick jobs it's been great. It's a brilliant monitor to have even if I'm not recording to it. On the DVX, I am doing the "record to 2 codecs" option (2 cards), using a 4k master for editing, and a 1080 for backup. Or, editing with the 1080 and then re-linking to the 4K footage for final export. I've done the same workflow calling on the ProRes files off the SSD for final export. Cool stuff.
Final thoughts--I think it's great to have a monitor/recorder with those abilities even if you're not recording to it all the time.

One qui question, which SSD drive do you use, I was thinking os Sandisk SSD Pro 480 GB, and it should be on the "approved" list from Atoms. I think that one gives good GB for the bucks. What do you think?

THANKS

Ulf
