External PCMCIA P2 card Reader??

Hi

My current laptop (by chance) has a PCMCIA slot and the HPX P2 cards work fine in there for offloading. But I'm thinking of buying a new laptop and these PCMCIA slots are not included any more.

So has anyone found a good external USB connected reader for P2 cards??

Thanks

There are many external USB P2 card readers, just none at the price point that some people want to pay. There's the $2000 PCD20, the $1600 P2 Store, and the $5000-ish HPG20, and the discontinued PCD10 and HPG10, plus every P2 camera is a USB P2 card reader.

Plus, to the O.P., there's a $59 Addonics expresscard->P2 adapter, and the $119 DuelAdapter, for using P2 cards in ExpressCard laptops.

If you purchase a mac laptop, they come with the expresscard port. Then get the DuelAdapter, hands-down, and you won't be disappointed. It's fantastic.

The Duel Adapter does not work in Snow Leopard and apparently they will never make drivers for it. Panasonic has planned to release a single card reader next year that will have support on the Mac.

Hi Andy,

and what expected rough Cost ?
and USB2-3 or other type of interface ?

Actually, the only current shipping MBP with a EC/34 slot is the 17-inch one.

Really? That sucks. A lot. Now I won't be upgrading my laptop... Sigh.

As an aside - Does anyone know if P2 cards are invented by and patented technology to Panasonic? Or if it's possible we might see some lower cost clones coming through eventually.

No clones available at all, although 3rd parties sell p2 cards but at the same price as Panasonic.

As an aside, all this has been kicked around here for years.

Sorry if I'm rehashing stuff. But just trying to understand what I've bought into.

The 3rd parties you refer to - so they sell Panasonic cards?

What I'm trying to establish is do Panasonic own the P2 format - and therefore they would protect it against cheaper P2 cards from say China? Or is P2 just another format that Panasonic decided to use?

More reading and less posting is what's recomended NewHPXuser. Just geek about the discussions on P2 cards and readers you'll be entertained and educated as to the P2 puzzle.

Cheers
