External or internal hard drives?

I've got a Mac and I only have 160 gigs on the space... I need more.

Should I buy internal memory at something like £300 for 250G

or

External at £110 for 250G

Would there be any problems if I'm working with footage which is edited directly from an external Firewire 800 drive?

Anyone edit directly onto external harddrive?

Been awhile since I've priced them but internal drive should actually be cheaper. (no case, power supply, etc)
If your Mac can hold an additional drive that would be the thing to do. Internal drives tend to give faster data rates and don't cause conflicts on the firewire ports.

I thought it would be cheaper too but apple say not. Scott where in California are you from I know a guy in LA called scott who introduced me to the DVX... coincidence?

don't listen to apple when it comes to prices (memory, drives, etc). They over price everything. Try other vendors, check the net. I usually begin with cnet and branch out to other sites if i can't find it there.

If you already have a machine then you might as well purchase extras other than Apple.
If you're order a new machine then it sometimes makes sense to just go ahead and get it built in from Apple (so it's covered under warranty and likely to be read yand working when delivered)

I'm not currently in LA

If you were using a PC you could get a SATA PCI card and also an SATA External Drive and have a nice speed of 150 megabytes/second. Almost 4 times as fast as IEEE and USB 2.0. I'm working on getting one myself. I don't know if apple supports that though.

if working only in DV you should be fine capturing editing to an external. But i would pop in an internal if you can. just less hassle. I like using internals to capture /edit and external to store footage as backup and disc images etc.

Internal is usually faster then external. But you should also have different disks for running your program and storing your data. If you already have 2 disks in your mac, then it's probably better to keep your video on one of the internal disks and use an external disk to archive "old" data. If you only have 1 disk, then consider getting another internal disk.

I don't know where you're shopping, but internal disks are definitely much cheaper than external disks.
