External Monitor sugestions?

Also, if you're doing crane work, SDI cables keep their quality much longer than HDMI and also can be bypassed through the DP6 to record in an external device like a Nanoflash. Running a 50' SDI cable is also WAY cheaper than running a 50' HDMI cable which you wouldn't want to anyway. but to answer your question, if you're only going to use it mounted on camera and dont plan on using external recorders, then HDMI is a perfect digital signal.

I'm watching this thread too :) I'd ideally like to get the HD-SDI myself, as I REALLY dislike how HDMI connectors work on objects that are not stationary. I broke probably 7 or more cables on my 7D because a little torque on the micro connector it has.

Does anyone know if you can setup the hdmi output to output Focus in Red assist lines via and external monitor? I've looked in the crappy manual and can't find anything. My copy of Barry's book can't get here fast enough. (Looks like Wed.) :)

Thanks in advance.

I had/have an iKan monitor. Impossible to pull focus. I upgraded to a Marshall. Blows away the iKan. NO comparison. Couple that with my Panasonic BT-LH1710W 17" client monitor an you are all set to go!

The TV Logic VFM-056 5.6" monitor uses the same LG panel that Small HD uses, as well as similar housing and user interface. It adds waveform, vector, luma check, variable aspect ratio markers, embedded TV and audio level meters from HD SDI. Pricing is just a bit more when you upgrade the Small HD scaling engine. I am talking to their master distributor about a group buy. I've already got one on order. The Small HD and TV Logic 5.6" monitors have amazing resolution and no other monitor near the price comes close. I think these monitors are the perfect size for the AF100, otherwise my favorite small monitor is the TV Logic LVM-071W 7" monitor, which I used since early 2008 with good results, but it costs $2500.

to be fair, what ive seen here doesnt justify the reasons why people get marshalls and ikans in the first place. Yes, their cheaper, in terms of build materials and R&D backing the device.

However, its worth noting that given FIR, false color, etc you can pull focus...well, REAL fast. if you know how to use them. if youre going for overall clarity, brightness, and resolution youre going to want a smallHD, period. if these things arent 95% of your concerns, though, id look at more varied range because you can still do a lot with "competitiors" monitors that aren't actually 800 x 600, have HDMI, SDI, and the like. both ikan and manhattan have monitors with all of these features:
v5600 ($599 for example) http://www.ikancorp.com/productInfo.php?id=1
not the quality in build as smallHD but good to know.
http://www.lcdracks.com/monitors/V-LCD651ST-3GSDI.html
also worth noting.

heres a monitor comparison chart for your review--worth at least perusing.

hope that helps
