I'm putting together a full package and want to make sure i'm purchasing the best gear. I want to be able to hold the camera slightly on the shoulder, and have a smaller monitor, preferably the same size as the lcd on the camera. This is more for ergonomics when shooting on the fly stuff. I'll probably need an isreali arm to hold the monitor in place.

Can anyone recommend something? Have any of you modified your camera in a unique way that makes it easier to shoot on the fly?

I've been searching the threads for a while and know there are other posts about this. I'm looking for something smaller than the small DP hd cam.

SmallHD DP6/4 are great. Also take a look at new Marshall 5.6 monitor. TV Logic amazing too. Zacuto EVF is good too. All depends on your budget, shooting style etc.

+1 for the TV logic 5.6 - really love mine.
Also - I'm not a big Marschall fan - but I heard good things about their latest model.

How are the Ikan and also the Lilliput monitors? They are considerably less expensive than the others. But how is the quality compared to the more expensive brands like Small HD or Marshall?

If I get a cheaper one, might just be more of a Director / general viewing monitor as opposed to used for critical focus, etc...

Surprisingly, I don't like Marshall monitor either but the new one gets pretty good reviews that is why I suggest it. I'm going to compare TV Logic and New Marshall soon because I'm looking for a good monitor with maximum features.

Ah very good suggestions. I'll report back once I have my rig together. Might even see if I can try out a few of them at Abel.

That 7" looks nice... about the same price point as the TVLogics only larger.

What is people's judgement on the Swit monitors? More particular the Swit 1071?

To hold the monitor in place, I've become a fan of the Ultralight Control Systems arms- I own three sets. http://www.ulcs.com/cinema.html These are getting very popular on Local 600 shoots in New York. The TV Logic is also great- we keep the waveform on for exposure and use the Sony onboard monitor strictly as a data screen. The TV Logic 5.6 is very flexible- HDMI to HD-SDI converter, will desqueeze 2x anamorphic, scopes, etc, etc- a lot of value for the money.

Just had some info from a dealer in EU... the v-LCD70MD 3G will be in shops in mid july and the price point is 879 pounds + vat.
That's pretty damn decent and might just mean that I'll go down that road.

Keep in mind that the FS100 does not transfer any exposure or focus assist functions to an external monitor. So note what you need in terms of these functions and purchase an external monitor that is feature rich to assist Camera Ops and DP's.

Also if your FS100 has "Markers" set to "On", it will not output any display information to the external monitor.

IMO 'The best' monitors are Transvideo daylight viewable - but too low res to focus

As for a small monitor I would suggest that you may have problems pulling your own focus with a small monitor - you need at least 720 of resolution to be able to evaluate focus

None of us want a large monitor but it is a trade off we make to get sharp images

The new evf might do the job being high res and small.. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?271723-The-EVF-answer-TVLogic-EVF035W-3G

It is also worth considering your desire for ..

a sunshade - dp6 is the best
wafeform - TVLogic is the one..

So what you are saying here are the features that exist on the fs100/700 such as red focus assist and zoom in focus assist wont work with ANY of these monitors? I do handheld run and gun work for active sports, would be excellent to have some sort of evf/monitor that could match what is already on the body. Something ergonomically sound. I don't want a large rig. I loved the formfactor of my hpx170
