External Monitor Alternative for the XHA1/35mm

We all know that you pretty much need an external monitor when you use an A1/35mm adapter set up if you want to have a decent chance at pulling focus.

Not everyone can afford an external monitor, especially just after they have plunked down a large chunk of $$ on the adapter.

I was playing with an idea of designing a lightweight magnifying hood that anyone could easily build for less than $20 in materials. Using a large rectangular magnifying glass ($12.99), some foam core ($3.00) and some velcro ($1.50), a small piece of old bicycle innertube, I came up with what is pictured below. It attaches to the flip-out LCD panel.

I was quite surprised that I was able to easily pull focus using the hood, even outdoors.

This is just a simple (somewhat ugly) prototype but if someone took their time, they could easily make something that looks good and is functional.

Clearly this isn't as good as an external monitor, but while you're saving up, this could be a good, low cost option.

I tried the hood man you indicated but was dissappointed. The image it produced really is not big enough so I can see why you feel that way about magnification. I wanted a larger image that you can really see the detail. The image produced by the magnifying glass I used is much larger and better protected from the sun. Even though the LCD is a lower resolution, magnifying the image this size does make it easy to focus and see as much detail as possible. It doesn't obsure detail in the least.

Again, I don't for one minute think that this is a good as an external monitor. I do think the results are better than the hoodman. It's still less expensive than the hoodman to build one like this and the resulting image is much larger.

I just offer this up to those who might find it useful.

If it works for you it is perfect. Thanks for sharing your idea.Thats what this site is all about

mvansomeren - Thanks for the inspiration. I actually have a monitor but I needed a screenhood and your build gave me the idea to just make my own.
Just finished it and saved a ton of dough.
