External mic - stereo?

Does the mic on the DVX distinguish between left and right sounds and record them appropriately?

I attached a shotgun mic to "INPUT 1" and turned off "INPUT 2" because I only wanted dialogue and it only plays in the left channel. Should I just use a sound editor to mix it into the right?

The inputs record on separate channels. I don't have the camera in front of me, but you can choose one of the inputs to record on both channels, but you must be sure your mike is plugged into that input. I think it is input 2.

Re: External mic - stereo?

I think you are talking apples and oranges...

The mic on the front is a fake stereo mic...it can record to both tracks if the switches are set correctly!!! But there is not enough separation between the mics to really get much real stereo sound!!! Unless you had two actors at 90 degree angles to the camera, you might hear a bit of stereo separation.

Most stereo is not really left and right, but a center mic and a mic that records the side lobes...M/S stereo...MID-SIDE!!! That requires two distinct and different mics...one for the mid and then a figure of eight mic for the sides!!!

Besides the mic on the camera is a POS from what I have read...I never even turned it on, but put an external mono mic into the mount and never looked back...

my two cents worth.

The built in mics are a POS, they weren't really meant to be used except for ambient sound and grab shots. It's rediculous to think a camera with all the pro audio features would have good built in mics. They expect to you to have your own preferences in mics, and to use your own.

BTW M/S is not the only system, I prefer ORTF! ;D
