External mic problem out of nowhere

I've been using my dvx to make an indie film for over 6 months now and know the score on it pretty well but suddenly out of nowhere today while filming my AZden external mic wasn't working to full capacity. I don't know what the problem is but this is what happens: I plug into input 2 but for some reason the mic doesn't record as loud as it should, it displays recording volume at only half when the mic volume is on full but it does pick-up and record audio only at half the volume and both channels are on and working. I've recorded well over 100 hours on the same settings so I know it's not that. Obviously it could be one of three things mic, mic chord, or camera. I am totally stumped and have nowhere else to turn. Please help.

Batteries? Phantom switch on? Try another cord. But it could be the line/mic switch. When it is on line it drops the power to a line level signal so it loses a lot of volume.

surprisingly enough it was in the settings, though like i said i never touched them. My dvx100a has been turning things on and off, example - i didn't know the camera beeped when turned or recording until a month ago when it switched on for no reason though I've had the camera for over a year. Thanks again for trying to help. Has anyone else had problems with the camera switching things on you out of nowhere?

My 100B used to switch to auto iris or AF when the switch was in MF but there was a software corruption because I bought my camera from a rental house so it was originally a rental cam and someone must have gotten it wet because there was some water damage.

Besides the mic problem, which was setting to automatically reduce distortion, I've had some color problems. Like when filming I've seen the color temperatures switch from one preset to the other without being touched. I bought mine used so I guess that's what you get. If your interested in seeing sum of my footage shot with the 100a I'm up at youtube.com/apekillsman thanks to everyone for the help.

No, no, no. I don't like using auto settings. Even so that would be the white tracking and I'm talking about color temperature change, blacks turn blue, reds show up high.
