Ok, so I bought a senneiser 300 and plugged it in, the mic icon on the gh2 came on letting me know the the camera was seeing the mic or whatever, but the sound meter wasn't showing that i was getting any sound. Pissed off, i send the mic back saying it was broken. Now I bought the senneiser 400 and same thing.... can't get the camera to show sound being recorded, but it works fine if i unplug the mic. Help...

No one knows? I'm hoping it's just a setting or something I'm missing though I checked. Doubt I got to faulty mics from two different distributes. Maybe the 1/8 to 1/4 adapter is bad..but given it's just wire I doubt that as well.

I might try another adapter but also figured that the camera wouldn't show the mic icon if that adapter was bad

I have a Sennheiser 400 on my GH2. To check if the mic is working, go to menu - motion picture- mic level adjust- ( right click ) and touch the sennheiser. You should see the sound levels move if your mic and adaptor are working ( and you have not forgotten to switch on the mic ). When I first used my Sennheisser on my GH2, the mic icon and sound level indicator appear on the LCD but for some reason, they no longer do. The only way for me to check that the mic is working is via the menu ruote -a bit of a pain. I also found that playback sound via camera speaker sometime works and sometime doesn't. I do not know if these two issues are related. Playback was fine before I had the Sennheiser.

I bought an adapter at my Radio Shack and, as I found out later, it was designed specifically for a certain cell phone. Same thing, got the icon, but no sound. Sometimes it would flash the "Please turn your mic on" message too. Definitely check a different adapter and make sure it's not designed for a cell phone.

I bought it at our local electronics store (called Norvak, here in Eugene). I'm not sure what brand it was, but if you go to a true electronics store, or find someone who knows what they're talking about at Radio Shack, or search it here on the forums, you should be able to find one.

I also got the Hosa one from BH Photo linked above. Used it with various audio setups without any problems.

Why don't you try plugging the mic into something else than your GH2?
Testing the microphone seems the first step. You can use an external recorder, your mic plug on your computer (macs have a line in so double check).

If the mic is working test with a different adapter. (those things are dead cheap) I recommend the Hosa one from B&H. Been using it on paid jobs, no problem.

if you can test a different mic, or even plug your ipod or other in it (put the volume way down and bring it up slowly on the ipod)
