So... I thought I'd get an external HDD for field back-ups. Thing is, the "official" ones by Panasonic are no longer current, and they haven't updated their list. Soooo... I thought I'd take a chance on one and share my experiences.
I got one of these: an Adata HD170, 2TB from these guys here: https://www.memoryc.com/storage/external-hard-drives/2tb-adata-dashdrive-durable-hd710-usb3-portable-yellow.html
Reading the instructions from Panasonic is says that the drive should be formatted in exfat. No prob. It comes in NTSC. So I hook it up and reformat in exfat. 7 hours later
rogar-Shock(DBG): it's done and I hook it up!
It doesn't fricken work!
rogar-KnockedOut(D OK, no prob, I can use it as a desktop backup, but then I do a quick format in NTSC and plug it into the DVX. It reads it! But says it want to format it into exfat! :badputer:
So I let it. and it actually works OK!
Some observations, the transfer speed is a bit slower (even though it's using a usb 3) than directly connecting the camera to a computer. Took about 7 minutes to back up 30 minutes of 4K stuff; but hey, it did it!
Seems like you aren't "locked" into the "approved" portable HDD's. But it is a bit of a crap shoot if the one you get will work. If it doesn't, try a quick reformat to NTSC and let the DVX reformat it, I guess not all exfat formats are the same.
Soooo... for those of us that don't yet have external monitors/recorders, for less than $100 you CAN get a remote HDD and do proper field back-ups! Just note, if you do a full disk format (which is a good idea anyway since during the 7 hours it checks all sectors and will reveal any glitches) the DVX will still want to do it's own thing!
