external HD

Hi all,

I have a bit of a silly question....

I have been saving all my clips to the hard drive on my laptop. It's 100GB, but obviously that goes by very quickly!! I am in the process of getting an external HD so that I can have all of my video files on that, and not take up a ton of space on my actual laptop. My question is, what should I do with all of the files on my laptop right now?? Is there a safe way to transfer those to my new HD? Should I just keep those on my laptop, and save all NEW clips and what not to the new HD??

I borrowed a friends USB 2.0 external HD and can't seem to figure out how to transfer the files from my project over to that safely.

Any help, hints, tips, etc would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Just copy all the files from your Avid video drive partition on your laptop to your new external drive. Verify the integrity of the transfer and then delete your original video drive's files.

Delete the two database files on the external drive - Avid will rebuild them when you re-launch. The database files are normally in the OMFI MedaiFiles folder on each hard drive that has Avid media stored on it. They're called "msmFMID.pmr" and "msmMMOB.mdb."

The reason Avid creates these is to help with media management. These databases store the structure of media files on your hard drive and allow the program to select the appropriate media file to play when you click something in Avid. The consequence to deleting them is that it causes Avid to reindex the OMFI MediaFiles folder and build brand new database files. Sometimes those databases can become corrupted, or just plan huge due to useage. Letting Avid rebuild will sometimes fix errors and improve performance.

Anyway, you should then theoretically be able to edit in Avid like when those files were on the laptop's hard drive. Only now you have the convenience of them being on an external drive.

That's what i'm not sure about... where do I find my avid video drive partition? I can't seem to figure this out, and feel a bit silly about it! Thanks for your help!!

It could be one of two places. If you store your media in OMF format then it's in a folder called "OMFI MediaFiles" on your hard drive. If you store in MXF then it's in a folder called "Avid MediaFiles" It's possible that you can have both folders if you have projects that use OMF and projects that use MXF.

Look for these two folder and copy which ever one(s) you find. Then follow the rest of DC's steps.
