HPX250: External HD

I recently hooked up my 1TB external to the HPX250 and formatted it. I copied my clips onto the drive and disconnected it. When I hooked up the drive to my mac to see if the files were transferred, which they were, I found that the drive capacity had dropped to 30GB. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

When you say it dropped to 30 Gb. This sounds like you're using a 32 Gb P2 card to copy right?

What format (Type S or FAT32) did you select when in the HPX-250? If you choose type S (which allows verification), only the copied P2 card will appear and the rest is hidden until copied. Typically a 1 Tb ext 2.5" will allocate 14 partitions for 64 Gb P2 cards. Unfortunately the copy method is based on image size of the P2 card. If you shoot only 6 Gb on a 64 Gb P2 card and perform file copy on the HPX250, the entire 64 Gb is allocated and can't be changed. You're effectively wasting 60 Gb.

There's a new 2 Tb 2.5" fr WD. It's useless with the current 64 Gb P2 cards because the max you can have is 23 partitions. 23x64 Gb is roughly 1.47 Tb. It's only possible if 128 Gb P2 cards are out, then it can take up to 23 128 Gb P2 cards on a 3 Tb hd.

I did format using Type S.

So basically I will have to dump the files from the drive onto my computer and then erase it through disk utility to get all the space back?

With Type S, HPX250 formats it as Linux partition. Yes, in Mac or Windows, you'll need to use the Disk Util to get it back in the Mac/PC world. For my workflow, I bought couple of the ext 2.5" USBs dedicated just for Type S copying.

$200 for dedicated 2.5" 1.5 Tb drives are far more reasonable than spending $2K+ on the MSU10 or AJ-PCD3 (3 P2 USB3 drive that needs ext. power). Fair price is $1.2K, not $2-2.5K for those accessories. Holy moly. Perhaps this is an indirect way for Panasonic to recoup $ fr. their camcorders.

Only small minor complaint is that the USB bus power coming out of the miniUSB port of the HPX250 is just not enough for some of the power-hungry USB drives. I noticed it doesn't show up at times. I usually have to plug the 2.5" hd via a special dual USB cable that has two USB female ports (1 for USB, 1 for USB power).
