External hardrive, couldn't find the right place to put this but can someone help

Hi all. Just bought an External hard drive as requested by a couple of people on this site but...the hard drive is 320 gb and each clip is only 12 gb but when I try to put them on the hard drive it says the file is too big to fit on there, why?

your Harddrive is FAT 32. You need to re format it to NTFS and you'll be fine

My computer/right click HD/ format/ select ntfs from the choices and format it

are you sure you've set you're scratch drive correctly? Have you already captured? Where are the files now? Are you trying to bring over one at a time?

A 320GB drive is really going to be like 300GB- b/c of internal processing and such.

Yo say that each clip is 12GB do you have more than 26 clips @ 12GB each? Are you trying to dump them over all at once?

Lots of questions to be answered? More info up front is better:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Wow, thanks for all your help but I've never had anything but trouble with external hard drives and this one is no exception. So, I formatted as told and it worked, I just dragged and dropped all my clips and started to edit but...Every 10 or 15 mins my edit suit decides to just close, no problem, it just means it going to take a bit longer because I have to save every 5 mins, however, every time I try to 'safely remove hardware' I get a message saying-PROBLEM EJECTING USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE-Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. ARRRRRRRRR. Please help. I have no programs open and am at my wits end.

..Let's hope Windows 7 wasn't your idea:-Laugh(DBG): (jk)

lets look at the first issue- first and foremost, you shouldn't have to work in such conditions where the program quits on you every 10 minutes:furious3:

it sounds like a data transfer issue. You still haven't specified your setup, so once again this is tough- kind of taking shots in the dark here my friend.

What kind of: computer, hard drive- type of ports , operating system, NLE, media, etc. etc, etc....

Ok so, you mentioned windows so I'm assuming PC, (silly question- but do PC's even offer FW400, FW800??)

If you're talking USB ports(2.0) and 12BG clips?? yeesh You're definitely looking at some bottlenecking of info -flow. If you scrub on your timeline too quick, or jump to clip that resides on a totally different part of your external drive- that could easily cause the bog down- and furthermore quit of your system.

MORE DETAILS POR FAVOR:smile:

Hi, thanks for that, maybe I am going to quick for it but what about the not being able to 'safely remove hard drive issue' ? I'm just using a dual core Toshiba laptop, a Toshiba Store Art 320GB usb 2.0 Ex hard drive and Roxio pro 10. At the moment it's a case of what I can afford- hope this helps, P.S. What does fw 400 fw 800 mean-I just want to make films. Cheers Jim

Well, the Toshiba Store Art 320GB drive is a 5400 rpm drive. That's your first problem. Video clips, particularly of the size you're using, need at least a 7200 rpm drive.

Second problem with that drive is that it doesn't have its own power supply -- it pulls power from the USB port. I'm no expert, and that may not have any impact on data throughput. But I've always used external USB drives that provide their own power.

Hope that helps.

FW 400/800 = Fire wire 400 or Fire wire 800. These are ports like usb but better- (well at least the 800 is better)-

they allow for these data rate transfers:

USB 2.0 = 480 Mbit/s
FireWire 400 = 393.216 Mbit/s
FireWire 800 = 786.432 Mbit/s

I know nothing about Roxio - so I can't help you there

Hi, thanks again, don't know where I'd be without this forum. So, I am using a firewire through a p.c an express card to load the original source material from camera to computer, I didn'y know you could get an external hard drive with a firewire connection or am I reading your answers wrong?

And while we're on the subject can anyone recommend the best inexpensive external hard drive that plugs in and runs at 7200 rpm or higher, I'll get my money back on the Toshiba and start again, cheers

Thanks again for all your help, we don't have any of the stores you mentioned on the little Island where I live but I'm sure I'll be able to locate one of the recommended e drives online, once again many thanks to all.
