external harddrives for mbp unibody?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking into buying an external "scratch disk" as they call it. I was reading here about what to get. Because SCSI drives won't work with my macbook pro should I just go with a firewire 800 drive? Are there fast enough 800 drives to edit in real time? If anyone knows of a good external drive to invest in, or just any suggestions in general, please let me know!

Thanks,

pfista

Have not used LaCie myself. However, I have friends who constantly report drive failures using this brand of drive. With my MacBook Pro I use G-Technology drives. Very dependable. Solid.

I would recommend going with eSATA. Just get an eSATA adaptor for your card slot and you're good to go. If you don't want to go eSATA you can certainly use FW800.

I use an esata express card and put western digital drives into external enclosures that I buy separately. I have never had a problem with any of the pieces. I travel with them often and carry two external drives. After each day of shooting the firestore/p2 cards get copied to one drive, and then that drive is cpied to the other, so there's a back up. I then have someone else in the crew carry the backup drive on the flight home just in case..

Thanks for the replies everyone. I definitely feel better about buying a g-tech now than I did about lacie. I'll probably just get the drive and use firewire. I can always get the esata card later. Thanks again!
