External Harddrive purchase

It's very easy to do. All external hard drives are basically just cases made around a regular hard drive. You simply connect the two cables in the case (one for power and one for data) to the hard drive and off you go!

Buy a regular hard drive (PATA- also called ATA) rather than a SATA hard drive, which has a different kind of connector. Then buy an enclosure like this one:

Granite Digital Case

Put the hard drive in and hook it up via firewire to your computer. Then you can use it as another hard drive. The great thing about hot swap cases like the one I mentioned is you can get a bunch of $20 cases and keep a lot of hard drives in case one gets filled (I have 13 300 GB hard drives that I constantly swap during projects).

THANK YOU SO MUCH. After talking with other people, this seams like the logical, cheapest, and smartest way to go.

I will be purchasing an interal and buying an enclosure.

Thank you once again,
Andrei

its 3.5in,
dont buy a 2.5in(notebook size) if you are planning on using it for video. they will be smaller slower and more expensive..

sink is right. You can also buy a 5.25" enclosure to use it with as you can find those cheaper sometimes (but it's bigger of course).

The hard drive you picked is a good one. I often scour Fry's for good deals like that....

are you using mac or pc ?
i also looking at purchasing the system from there.
as its very impressing.

I have a 300 gig Maxtor Hard Drive... but it's a PATA. I got a great deal from my buddy. Should I just trade for his new 250gig SATA Hard drive? (It's for iMac.) A side note, this is an interanl drive in an enclosure connected via firewire.

I've been told that if you buy an enclosure, to look for one with an Oxford 911 chipset. apparently, it's more reliable.
