Hi,

I am currently running FCP Studio 5.1 on a 20" iMac with 2 gigs ram and a 250 gig hard drive. I am looking to be purchasing an exteral hard drive to store my captures on.

I was wondering why people choose Lacie HD's, over other brands?

ALSO, Curious to know what you use, and the size of it.

All the best,
Andrei

Anything but LaCie!!!!!!
Read these reviews (I have my own horror story):http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/cu...omer-reviews.sort_by=-SubmissionDate&n=541966

I've had good luck with my Maxtors :)

I have had great luck with Maxtors and have a La Cie that has performed flawlessly. I think the biggest thing is that you get one that has firewire 800 as well as 400 and USB. Fry's and many other spots online can fix you up.

Isn't it best to connect using a firewire port rather than USB. Plus, all the USB ports on my computer are just about taken up, I'm going to go buy a USB hub within the week.

Make sure you get Firewire 800 as it is the fastest connection of the three. If your make does not have it, then use the firewire 400.

I have a Lacie, and I will not buy one again. My first one crashed, and I lost footage. I was lucky enough to have the Apple store exchange it, otherwise I would have had to send it into Lacie.

The replacement works fine, but I don't trust it.

You folks are aware that LaCie is not a drive manufacturer right? The companies that make drives are Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, Fujitsu, Hitachi and IBM. LaCie and people like them just make cases which rarely fail. All drive manufacturers have occasionally released bum drives, so if you are extremely concerned about reliability you should focus your attention on the drive, not the case.

I own a Seagate external 300GB, and just recently bought a Seagate internal 400GB SATA to be my slave in my G5. I have had the external over a year, and have had no problems. With the prices of hard drives dropping, I may construct my own storage system... these boards have given me serious ideas.

The LaCie problems seem to be with the bridge board not the drive itself. At least for audio work LaCie has been banned from a number of studios in LA because of serious crashes ant very bad times. In most of the reported LaCie crashes it has been possible to swap the drive into another box and recover some or all files.
So while your right 99% of the time the LaCie problems do apear to be related to the box not the drive.

Best external drive I've ever owned is the G-Drive from G-Technology.

Most stable drive I have, and the form factor is beautiful.

So if I buy a harddrive, and an enclosure will there be a performance difference between a home built external harddrive, and a G-Drive?

For the price, this is the best drive set-up I've found for video... 3 TB, with 1.5 dedicated to mirroring the first drive. For only $2,299... can't beat it. The 1280GB version (640gb plus 640 as back-up) starts at just $799.

Made with Seagate drives. Firewire 400 and 800.

I dont have that specific drive(s), but I highly recommend OWC. . Since I found them I only buy my enclosures from them, and have been looking at picking up one of these RAID enclosures....

Anyone knowof good places to by the G-Drive that has a good reputation and is a reliable site/store to deal with. I would purchase off apple ,but i think it's a little more expenive there.

I recommend just buying an internal hard drive and then putting it into an external enclosure. This way, you will never run out of space. I recommend the Granite Digital external drives and any of the major HD's by Seagate, Hitachi, Maxtor or Western Digital.

Sounds intresting and somewhat cheaper.

How would I go about connecting the internal hd though my computer if it's going to be enclosed in a case and used as an external?

and how hard is it to do?

Thanks for the advice,
Andrei
