External Hard Drive Set-Up

I know this has been done to death, but every user has his/her own needs. Here are mine:

1) I want an external hard drive of 500gb for Intel iMac (20 inch, 2 RAM, 450 GB Internal). Looking into the G-Raid Combo FW800/FW400 (0 Raid) - http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-RAID.cfm

2) I want a back-up drive to attach to it. 500gb capacity. I'm wondering if something like this would work well - Seagate Push Button Back-Up - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148147

...I'd consider using a G-Tech G-Drive Combo (500gb) but the price is $500, about $200 for the pushbutton drive, plus I'd have to install some sort of back-up software for the Mac... whereas, unless I'm mistaken, I could just push a button with the Seagate option.

Any thoughts/advice on this? Thanks!

Backup software = deja vue or just good old rsync (my favorite), super easy to make a clone backup.

I'd have a set of resiliant portable drives (little lappy drives) and then a "home base" with big cheap sata drives.

Well, I'm not a pro user yet ... so, I figure that 500gb is enough to get me started.

Any other suggestions though, in terms of hard-drive configurations that would achieve roughly the same thing as what I'm describing?

Also, turing -- I'm not sure what you mean by "little lappy drives". Which drives in particular would you be recommending... and are you talking about a portable usb2 powered drive for use with a lap-top and then dumping off the data to the "home base"?

I've got a firewire bus attached to my iMac which enables me to attach up to 6 devices. Is that not a good idea? What could happen?

This is not a good idea.

By a firewire bus, I am sure you are referring to a hub.

FW devices for DVCProHD are dicey at best, and you don't want to divide the single FW bus, or daisy chain.

Get a desktop, not an iMac. You have a $7,000 cam and a poor choice, at least in my view, for a editing station. No disrespect intended.

I'm sorry, yes, I meant a HUB.

No disrespect taken.

However, people are using their laptops for capturing and even editing HVX footage... I don't see why the iMac would be a problem for that, unless it is also a problem for laptops?

There are 2 firewire inputs on the back of the iMac... I can put one firewire drive direct into that one.

My plan is to plug the HVX into that drive directly to offload footage.

Then to do a back-up of that data to another external drive which is connected to the 1st drive via either firewire or USB 2.

Footage to be accessed for editing/viewing would come off of external drive #1 (not #2).

I just wanted to try and be more clear about what I'm trying to do here to make sure we are on the same page -- so I could re-ask: Are you sure this is a bad idea? If so, what is wrong with it exactly?
