so i wasnt really sure where to post this so i figure this was the best place hopefully you guys can help
so the other day i upgraded to osx leopard and today i have my Lacie 500 gb plugged in and started fcp but then a message boxs from osx saying device removel and thenmy lacie didnt show up on the desktop i tried unplugin it and re plugin it back in and another message popped up saying that i needed to back up my hard drive and reformat it. so i stopped using that drive and plugged in my other Lacie drive that is 160 gb and i was able to use it for a little but but then the removed device message appeared and it wasnt recognized by my computer but the reformat message did not show up. does that make sense. im have no clue what the problem could be or where to start to fix it this has never happen in the years i have work with macs and lacie harddrive please help!!!! thanks everyone

You might try putting the drive in another case. If that doesn't work the other options are too pretty. LaCie...:furious3:

I had a similar problem but with a Hard drive caddy system using USB and Firewire 400. I bought a Maxtor Firewire 800 drive and I have not had a problem since. I am running a 24"iMac. I tried an other caddy and the same thing happened. I came to the conclusion that the Hard Drive where no good... Hope this helps???

There is a reason DriveSavers will offer you a 10% discount when you tell them that you have a LaCie drive. There are a lot of LaCie drives that fail.

There are a lot that don't.. they have a large part of the HD market. Still... they are cheap drives.

Sorry you found out too. But it could be the power supply -- take the drive out and see. I'll wager it is the drive itself though.

hanks for the help but maybe im still unclear on why this happend all of a sudden my 500gb hardrive is not even a half year old yet, and my second lacie 160 gb hard drive is about 2 years old i could understand the 160 gb crash and i undertand that drive do crash. but it didnt start until i upgraded to leopard

These things are mechanical.

They have moving parts, power supplies, etc.

They are only as good as their weakest link.

That's why many of us prefer to build our own drives with Hitachi, Seagate, or really good Maxtor mechanisms and cases from wiebetech or granite digital.

They we can control more of the components.

o awsome i didnt even know you could do that. thanks for the information everyone, ill probably go buy and new drive but because im a film student i dont think i can afford to build my own hard drive yet, what other hard drives beside Lacie would you recommend?

wait a second. the device removal message happened to two different drives? i would look at the cable or the FW bus itself. not likely that two drives fail the same way within minutes of each other....

yea the message happened to both of my drive the first one it wouldnt let me use it at all and that is the newest one i bought the 500 gb but the second one which is my older 160gb drive gave me the device removal message so i shut down unplugged it and plug it back in and turned it on and it let me finnish my project. but my 500gb didnt give me a chance

It sounds to me like you have an I/O problem that could be related to your very recent upgrade to Leopard. I would start by reinstalling the OS. Can you try to hook up your hard drives to other Macs?

If reinstalling Leopard doesn't work, you probably have an I/O issue with the firewire or USB bus on your Mac, or it could be the I/O controller on your drive. Like cheezweezl said, it is VERY unlikely that two drives would fail at the same time. Possible though, I guess.

I had my own horror story with a LaCie 500. These reviews pretty much say it all. As the Capt. said, DriveSavers offers a discount on LaCie...but the 500 counts as a RAID! You could expect a $4500 bill if you had to use them. :furious3:

so is there an update or something i can do to fix my I/O problem if i have one will clegg, or would reinstalling leopard probably do it?

and blaine those reviews were not to pleasing ha but thank you im gonna look for a new brand to buy or build my own some time soon just in case these lacie are really down for the count
