External Hard Drive Help

NO CA$H

Veteran
I installed my Firewire card and it is working because my deck is working but for some reason my G Drive is not. It is powered on and plugged in and device manager says its working properly. But when I go to Start > My Computer > It isn't listed under hard drives and I can't choose to save my project in it in Vegas.

Anyone know whats wrong?

hmm..
what brand/moddle drive.. and what FW card?

can you check the drive on another mahince or connection (USB?)?

Its a 250GB G Drive G tech and its a belkin FW card.

I'm gunna try it with USB...

Nope doesn't work with the usb either but it does make take sound when I plug it in.

In whatever browse application, try right-click > "refresh" to see if it recognizes the drive.

No you are not. That's good news. :)
It means that you won't loose anything making it work.

Initialization is basically formatting it. Did the drive come with a CD?
P.S. geeks on the forum, feel free to step in anytime :)

No it only came with an instructional cd but I just figured out what to do. I went to computer management and I'm formatting it now.

Okies.. a steap ahead.. you should be set once the format is complete. :)

Most drives come pre-formatted, i'm supprized yours didn't.

2 questions: are you formatting NTFS or FAT32? and do you ever use the HD with a Mac?

Yeah I've never heard of formatting a brand new HD.

I think NTFS and I only use it with a PC.

Thanks for the help.

ok, unless you are using a Mac, NTFS is the prefered format - FAT32 has a filesize limit of 3.2GB, meangin that your video files are limited to about 18mins of DV - no good for long takes.

no problem, happy to help.
