Now that larger P2-card's are available I will change to those. My firestore has been highly reliable for many years, but it's battely is not up to the task really. Did change already for better capacity HD-battely, but now it has started to show signs of ageing. There is also hassle with firefire-cables.

Direct capture to duo-core windows (trough NLE capture) laptop hasn't been reliable enough. Even that tiemcode-setting is on "free-run" it isn't 100 % reliable.

But P2 cards & downloading via pmcia-slot works always. And you can always check with P2-viewer before reformatting. So I would recommend take cheap laptop with pmcia-slot to your journey. Then you can always connect a new harddrives to it etc.
 
Does speed make a difference if i'm putting a 1.5 or 2tb drive in a fw400 enclosure since the speed is limited to 400mbps anyway? A lot of the drives in that size are of the "green" variety.
 
Green drives spin slower, so they can potentially have slightly slower access times (not as snappy). This really depends on the model though, some of the newer ones are pretty quick.

Otherwise, the maximum throughput of fw 400 will be saturated either way, so a green drive should perform similarly when working with big files (like with video editing).
 
I think i'm going with the WD 1.5tb Green drive and an esata card for my lappy. I was surprised to find out average read is significantly better than my 74gb raptor in my desktop (a few years old). From what I recall, the green drive was 107MBps and my old raptor was around 74, which, my 7200rpm laptop drive beats apparrently. HD tech has definitely gotten better.
 
SSD is the way to go for the $ its a better upgrade than ram

external lower rpm is better because they are more reliable
i will upgrade when ssd price is fair, 80gigs is over $200 :-0
 
EZ-Quest are my favorite. I have 3 of them.

Been using the 1 TB 7200rpm firewire SEAGATE model number [FONT=Verdana,Tahoma,Arial][SIZE=-1]ST310005FPA2E3-RK and it's doing a great job.
Caught it on special for $99 and now I want another one but can't find one under $152 :(

This method worked pretty cool. There's a status bar that's showing you the percentage of footage transferred over to the external. Takes a while though, seems to dump at real time. I use the Iomega 150gb I think it is. The have both USB and Firewire capabilities, are small and light, and look like alcohol flasks.

I'm searching for a rugged and reliable 500+GB external for use with a Macbook for storage and backup. I'd like to partition and I've only got a USB port. After two WD Essentials dying on me and losing my doc footage, I'm ready for something with a legitimate warranty and can stand to take a hit.

I just bought a a G-Raid 4th generation 1 tb drive. I love it! I have had three external hard drives fail me in the last 4-5 years and it just makes me so nervous using them. You guys know as well as I do that some of the media lost can be devastating. Personally and financially. I found a really good deal at www.filmemporium.com, if anyone is interested.

I have a 1 T NAS storage device from Buffalo. I finally got it to work with my Imac Time Machine. It is still working on the initial back up. It's been working for the last ten hours and is only 92g into the 300g total. Does that seem right?

The handbook for the drive states the first time will take longer but subsequent back ups will not take as long because it only backs up changes. I would like to start removing old material from my macbook. Will Time Machine then remove the same material from the back up?

I the market for a good high capacity external drive, primarily to be used for for video editing.
After some research, was going to go for a 1TB Glyph technologies unit, but saw this lacie 2TB on sale for the same price.

This might be a dumb question but....If I buy a hard drive array, that comes with say 2 500GB drives in it in a raid 1 or raid 0 setup, can i replace those two drives with 2 1tb drives or even more or is it set at only 500gb drives?
 
depends on controller for drives, also maybe upgradeable firmware maybe no maybe yes

controller = cpu on a chip handles i/o of drives and syncs firmware is program upgradeable
most cheap stuff is non upgradeable because they build arrays and sell model as cheap as possible

So in the ones you just linked can I just swap the drives out when I fill them with more 1tb or 2tb drives? Are they brand specific? Also I would prefer FireWire 800 over USB and I am unable to do esata with my current setup
 
my best advice is buy 1 drive and use as is

i dont have a raid array i could only see searches
same as you could online comparisons only so..

buy either 1 big drive or if you need raid buy big
get something large 2x 2TB so no upgraded needed
i know it seems cool to open up and replace yourself

but its much better to have a reliable drive less moving
by having 1 drive you have more stability less price
you can do 2 and stripe backup less performance

I dont NEED raid, but it would be nice to have instant backup going on the other drive, and buying more and more external HD's is getting annoying plus they are significantly more expensive than internal drives (I have to keep buying externals with firewire 800 when i could just buy a raid and switch the drives (with internal drives which would be cheaper) when they fill is my understanding) perhaps I have it all wrong. However I fill up my drives quickly. I do wedding videography and need to hold onto all the raw footage, and since I am paranoid I want that backed up twice. If each wedding is around 100gb that means I go through 2 tb's in 10 weddings.
