External DVD Burner suddenly not working in DVDSP

External DVD Burner suddenly not working in DVDSP. When trying to burn It says to put a DVD in but never does anything after that. I have made dvds before in DVDSP so I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

Any ideas?

Which computer?

How old is the computer and the drive?

Do CDs or DVDs mount in the Finder.

Does it show up in disc burning in About This Mac?

Not sure if this helps, but in my Mac Pro, my bottom SuperDrive is my default drive, i.e. it's always listed as the first drive when I go to the build/format/burn menu, which confuses some people when they use my comp. They put in a dvd and get frustrated when the computer doesn't sense it and keeps prompting them to 'insert a blank dvd'. Then, after laughing a little, I tell them to switch drive paths. :D Maybe you're in a similar situation and just have switch to another drive path?

I think you are correct dingos, how do I choose the drive path in DVDSP? I used toast a couple days before this issue and I think it might have set the default burner to the burner in the computer, instead of the external burner. When I went in toast and burned a dvd and then went back to DVDSP it wasn't fixed.

And David S., I have the big 24 inch Mac going on 3 years old with the duo processor, beefed up as much as apple could fit in it.

That's the only way

You get that election when you choose to burn

Hi David, "Dingos" had it right, it does not give me a selection to choose a path, it just says to put a dvd in, that's it. At no point does it ask or allow me to choose the dvd burner I want to use, which is odd because I can using Toast. Am I missing something here?

Does anyone know how to pick which DVD burner to use in DVDSP? I checked "preferences" and see no way to pick. In toast it allows you to pick the dvd drive in the bottom right hand corner, but DVDSP is the elusive silver fox.

When you choose build and format, at the bottom of the window there should be a drop down menu where you can choose any recognized drive or the hard drive itself (for a disk image).

The drop down menu permits you to elect which "output device" to use

Thanks David, this was exactly what was wrong! Thanks a million! And thanks for explaining about Pan-Scan I am no longer using that option. Unless I am going to make a dvd for people at work to watch on there tv (i expect a lot of people don't know how to switch their dvd player over to 16x9)

I do have another quick question, when I click on the simulator it has three options a SD, HD 720, and HD1080 option, does this influence the quality of the dvd in anyway? I went into preferences and chose 16x9 letter box, I think I should be good now for making a true 16x9 dvd with the highest quality possible, am I missing anything else?

Oh one more, and where is the control for turning the audio down on the music playing in the opening menu, it is WAY louder than my sequence footage.

No. It doesn't have anything to do with the quality of what you will produce.

Audio levels need to be dealt with before the asset is imported in DVD SP.

DVDSP only authors. Use FCP to export the audio with adjusted levels.
