External Decks

Re: External Decks

..i love those big horizontal lines.. they are so cool!! ive only had them once during capture, nd i rewound the tape and recaptured that section without hitch. i always get big sparklies over the whole image of entire blocks dropping out at the start of a tape though.

So are you saying you've never had a glitch that wasn't a recoverable capture problem? I'd be shocked... and offer you a nice sum for your camera! Magic!

If not, what's your glitch rate? Have you never had a sparklie? Ever? Really?

Re: External Decks

Do you guys mean that I can do a redundant recording while shooting by linking my DVX with another camcorder linked by firewire? So that both will record the same thing for safety??

I'd be interested to know too -- that sounds heavenly.

When my camera was new, fresh heads, etc., I'd say that I NEVER got dropouts or sparklies. It was amazing -- I've been using DV for over 7 years now, and I don't think I'd ever seen that. Now that I have over 180 hours on my camera, I'd say I get a little sparkly frame about every 10 minutes or so. I haven't had a nasty "venetian blind" dropout on the DVX yet, which I am quite grateful for, but I'm getting really tired of the sparklies! Even though they are basically fixable in post, they're still annoying.

Yes, you can do exactly that. And you can have the DVX control the other camera too, so it'll start/stop recording when the DVX does. And what the other camera records will be exactly bit-for-bit what the DVX records, except that if you get hit with a dropout on the DVX tape, the odds are good that your backup camera won't have a dropout at that same moment, so you should have the ability to repair any dropout footage.

Can you give us some hints on how? That is, is there something better than hand-editing in Photoshop or something?

Re: External Decks

Assuming the sparkly happens only in one frame, you can clone the same pixel(s) from the previous or next frame. So yeah, it's hand-done. It's trickier if there's quick motion, too.

Re: External Decks

In 250 hours on my camera, and never seen a sparkle, maybe im just not looking close enough. I probally have only dropped about 200 frames, but never.. and I better knock on wood, Ever have had a dropout that I couldnt recover from the Master tape. I have however has some horizontal tears that where wierd as hell awhile ago but that was about it.

Maybe because of the site I got a "special" dvx from Panasonic lol.

Re: External Decks

ha ha no kidding. I do however manually clean my heads etc. often, and im shooting at sea level, so maybe that helps.

I'm buying a DVX this month and I plan on using it to do legal video (depositions mostly) so I'm planning on getting a sub $1,000 panny camcorder to function as a recording deck (saves 30 hours a week on my heads). Also, the DVX doesn't like LP apparently and being able to record in 2 hour chunks is kind of important for deps. I figured I would probably get this one, since it has a nice 3.5" monitor, and I can use the battery charger w/the DVX. I'm curious to know if the time/date information will be recorded from master, slave or neither. Time and date need to be displayed in depositions. And also if panasonic has any "power save" modes like the XL-1s do. I learned the hard way that they'll turn themselves off unexpectedly. To clarify, I won't be recording on the DVX, just running the firewire through to the cheaper camcorder and recording on that one. Is this feasible?

Re: External Decks

For your work, no.  The time/date stamp can be recorded, but not by firewire.  You'd have to run the analog output of the DVX into the analog input of a deck (which could likely be done to that same camera, but...)

But I question whether you want to go this route.  You would probably be much better off getting a real DV deck, like the AG-DV2500.  That way you can use large cassettes and get a real 4.5 hours of recording time.  Recording legal video on LP mode just seems like an accident waiting to happen.

At the Department of Justice we used large format DV (DVCAM to be precise) for taking depositions as well as full blown production. When we sent out a PD-150 for a taping that might prove long, we either fed it into a deck that could use L sized tapes, or we eventually, right before I left, were using FireStores with daisy chained LaCie firewire drives.

Re: External Decks

I would be making a simultaneous SVHS recording - the legal video standard ::). Wouldn't the smaller camera record it's own time/date, though?
I don't want to burn the time/date on if I don't have to because sometimes clients request I leave it off (they request this after I've shot it, of course). I may just go ahead and record in sp, it's just a pain to have to keep changing tapes in a ten hour deposition.

Re: External Decks

yeah the real deck may be a better option like Barry said. Instead of the 2500 I would recommend the DSR-11, as you can record in DVCAM format on the large tapes as well, its a little more safe, and the heads should last you 3x as long as a little camera so the cost should balance out.

Re: External Decks

I own a AG DV2500 VTR. If you shoot in 24pa with DVX100 and use the DV2500 to record to, will it still be recording in 24pa?

Re: External Decks

yes it will, the DVX creates a pulldown that converts 24p into a standard 50i DV stream. This stream can be recorded to any DV device. A flag is saved to allow the NLE to remove the pulldown and display 24p in the timeline

Re: External Decks

Can you point me to an archive that explains the process of using Cinema Tools to do the 2:3:3:2 pull down? I tried with the batch feature in Cinema Tools and it would only let me select one clip at a time. What if you have 1000's of clips to pull down?

Re: External Decks

Hey Guys, when capturing with a cheap mini DV camera, will time codes show up the same way? I was trying this out on a friend's Panasonic GS120, and I couldn't seem to capture as I normally would. I use FCP 4.1. I had to set my capture setting to noncontrollable device in FCP and capture that way withouy being able to mark my in and out points. Was I doing something wrong?

All I want is to be able to search through the footage, mark in/out points and capture.
