external audio settings for HPX200?

not sure what you mean by "settings" there are really only a couple primary options (mic vs line and phantom powered or not) and it can vary based on the specific mic youre using...

but in general for pro shotguns: set your inputs to mic level and phantom power (+48v) to on

Thanks, I have the Input 1 set to mic on the front jack. On "AUDIO" I have Input 1 set to on for "mic power +48v." Not sure what should be set on CH1 and CH2. I guess CH 1 is just set to Input 1?

i havent used an hvx200 in several years, so im not sure of the exact controls. but on my hpx170 (which is the hvx200's older and more attractive brother)
CH1 has internal mic, input 1 and input 2
CH2 has internal mic, input 2

so some common approaches are:
- set both to internal and get stereo from the internal mic
- set CH1 to input 1 and CH2 to input 2 IF you have two different audio sources (say 2 lavs, a lav and shotgun, or stereo input from a stereo mic or PA system)
- set both CH1 and CH2 to input 2 and get a dual mono recording from input 2 (what this is handy for is if you have a wildly dynamic audio source - like a "fire and brimstone preacher". you can run one channel at normal gain, then dial the second one down a bit to accomodate loud peaks)

Thanks.... for the information I really appreciate it. I ended up just shooting with the internal mic.... and it will be fine for this small project. My help bailed at the last minute and it would have been difficult for me to hold the shotgun mic and camera at the same time.

it would be wise to get yourself a microphone boom stand or c-stand with boom clamp, super clamp with a pin, or even just a camera-top shock mount - ANYTHING.
because i can PROMISE you from experience, you WILL find yourself in this situation again ; )
