External 1394 Disconnect

I have read multiple threads here and found no solution. Setup is a HVX200 with FS-100 firestore.

I'll make this easy. We have 4 identical setups. 3 work fine. Just this one is not playing nice. This is what I did.

  • Verified settings on other cameras that work fine between HVXs and Firestores.
  • Swapped Firewire cables. They work with other setups so cable must be good.
  • Reset Camera and restored initial setups, reconfigured camera settings on HVX, still nothing.
  • Upgraded Firestore firmware on all FS-100's. Other work fine, this one doesn't.
  • Swapped Firestores that work to test on this setup, same problem.
  • Swapped Firestore from this setup to ones that work, functions 100%.
My conclusion:

  • Firewire cables not issue since they work on other setups
  • Firestores are work fine on other setups
  • Must be camera. How can firewire port be busted? Feels like brand new. Cables plug/unplug firmly.
Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance.

Also, I can tell when FS-100 is connected by two "--" dash marks on screen next to 1394 under red blinking P2. It turns to a red circle record symbol when recording to FS-100. Those marks do not appear.

Just verified settings again on HVX. I went through each menu in P2 camera and MCR mode as well as Camera Tape and VCR mode. Both identical. FS-100's work with one and not others. I also took a FS-100 from a working setup with cable and swapped to flawed HVX and got nothing. That eliminates firewire cable and FS-100 Firetsore again.

Have you checked the firmware version on both the camera and you firestore? Any differences between the other setups?

Verify your firewire port is working on that camera. Try to connect it to a Mac computer through 1394 Device Mode, or communicate with a hard drive in 1394 Host Mode, or, just plug two cameras together via firewire. Put one in MCR mode and turn the thumbnails off; you should see the other camera's image on the first one's display. If you do, the firewire port is working. If you don't see anything, then yeah, it's probably an indicator that you should further investigate whether that particular camera's firewire port is kaput.

Thank Barry. I tried the above. 1st connecting 2 camera together, the same way we sync timecode, and nothing. No video on camera in MCR mode. Then I tried connecting it to my MacPro in 1394 device mode. I get error "1394 Device Disconnect"

Is my firewire kaput? What is ballpark to fix? How long will it take?

Okay, well, sounds like the firewire is indeed kaput. So before coming to that conclusion, make sure that you can do the firewire connection successfully between the other two cameras, just so that you absolutely have the procedure properly done.

Make sure that all the cameras are in the exact same recording mode (choose something easy like 1080/60i mode). Put one of the "known good" cameras in camera mode. Put the other "known good" one in MCR mode, and the "suspected bad" one in MCR mode. Turn off their thumbnails. Plug in the "known good" one, and see if the source camera's image shows up on the MCR screen. If it does, then you're doing it "right", so now try the "suspected bad" one (using the same source camera and same firewire cable). If the image doesn't show up, then yeah, I'd say the firewire port's blown.

Contact an authorized service center (such as DVXUser sponsor Specialized Communications) about cost and time frame for a repair. Good luck.

Thanks Barry! My question is, how did it just die? Sure the camera is about 3 years old with 600+ hours on it but I have never used the tape drive or firewire port to import. LAME!
