Extending recording time / file size beyond spec

Hi,

Is there a way to extend recording time (past the 29 min or 4GB limit) perhaps by using an external hard drive through USB or via the wireless adapter / ethernet adapter?

If not are there any hacks on the horizon? Even if it were possible I heard there was a problem with the CMOS overheating after extended video recording - is that true.

(I haven't been following DVXUser for a couple of months so apologies for any repetition and I have been using the search facility)

The 4GB limit is around 12 minutes in 1080P. The 4GB limit is because of the FAT32 formatting system used by the camera, not because of CMOS imager overheating.

No, there is no simple or even complex way to record to an external hard drive in HD, at least none that I am aware of.

The 5D MKII is pretty much a sealed systemm in regards to video. The HDMI output goes to 480 SD when in recording mode.

Hiya:

I am a disciplined person and I told myself to wait until after NAB announcements, just on the really off chance that RED would surprise the world and be shipping Scarlets in two weeks or if another company pulls a rabbit out of a hat with something large sensor and new. I doubt if it will happen but you never know. I have been renting and borrowing the 5D from a friend who owns it, so I am familiar with its ins and outs. I kind of bought the Letus to experiment with and I am kind of done with it, too much hassle, end result does not look that great no matter how I tweak or change lighting. The results I get with the 5D, although it is a total PITA to use, are pretty great. You cannot substitute a 35mm adapter with great glass for a camera with great glass and a huge sensor with huge pixels that are light sensitive. Will still be using mainly my 170, but the 5D will be the artsy b-roll camera.
