Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and I just got my dvx100a's troday! I am excited and I want to do some testing for different lighting situations. I want it to be organized and effective. Can anyone suggest a pattern for testing?
How good are you at lighting? Do you have a DP? If so, try lighting simple setups that include only one type of light source (i.e. tungsten or fluorescent) only. This way, you can play with white balance to try and obtain the correct color temperature.
After that, try mixed light source setups. In this scenario, you can manually white balance for a chosen light source. While doing this, you can see the effects that different light sources have on your subject (whatever that may be).
Don't forget to record smpte bars at the begining of every tape. This will help you later to color correct your monitor. That is of course assuming you have knowledge or experience with color correction. The easiest thing to look for though when color balancing your monitor using smpte bars is to look at the white block. It should be pure white without a hint of any color and no grey bleeding in.
After that, I would reccommend shooting outdoors using available light and filming at all times of the day. Outdoor colors look very different at various times of the day including bright sunny days as opposed to overcast days. Have fun.
DP - Director of Photography or Cinematographer. There are many very good books out there about digital filmmaking. Check out Digital Filmmaking 101 by Dale Newton and John Gaspard. Great book if you are wanting to make movies.
Books are definitely the way to go, other than physically adjusting & playing around with the settings. Although, you will want to know what each of the different settings controls before you start tampering with them too much.
Also, once you've decided how to set up your camera, you can save all of your settings, so that they're ready to go next time you film in that situation.

Don't know what a DP is. I am brand new to all of this...[/quote]
Congratulations on your new camera. It's a great piece of equipment.
I'm interested, though, if this your first video camera? Just wondering since you mention being new (DP question) and the DVX is a might fancy and expensive camera to start out with.
In any event, you are going to have a great time with it.
I own 2 other mini-dv cameras but none with this much manual control. I have always been more creative in post...I have never used too many manual settings. I would like to learn a lot more in this area though so that I can get my moneys worth out of this dvx.
Can you guys link me to some specific books on this stuff? I want to dive in head first...

Absolutely. This book is a must for anybody with new questions and not as much experience. This book is a tremendous resource, and I think you will find it very useful.
