Exposure Compensation

Hi All,

What Auto Iris mode do you all use for shooting on the DVX200? Let's assume here that auto iris is a must before anyone suggests using fully manual? :-)

If find the way it meters light levels very unpredictable and way off at the default setting. I was shooting at the weekend in mixed light (continuous bright sun to overcast) and had a real struggle getting it under control. I ended up at -15 on the Auto Iris Level but that left some shots under-exposed.

I'm yet to play with knee level etc. on this camera but I thought I'd ask to see whether anyone had experienced this. This is my first Panasonic camera (I'm from a Canon background) so this may be a quirk.

Thanks,

Torsten.

My experience with it is limited, but I've found the default auto iris settings to work fairly well outdoors. Just noodling around, I shot an hour or so of footage at one of my model rocket club's launches a week ago and kept it on auto the whole time. Mostly a clear sky, but it got cloudy toward sundown. With the usual limitations (like exposure changing when somebody walked in front of the camera), the results were more consistent than I could have achieved manually without putting a lot more time into setting up the shots. Yeah, I was being lazy. No, I take that back -- I was doing research, getting more familiar with the camera. :)

This was with the 1.51 firmware. I'm not sure if that would make a difference.

I've also found in some recent experimenting that auto iris in 1.51 works pretty well. I wouldn't trust AWB under changing a changing sky so much but I haven't noticed anything wrong with Auto Iris.
