Exposure and Editing

My brother and I are starting our own wedding and event videography business. We have a DVX-100B and are using it to shoot pop-warner football games right now. We have ran into a problem with one particular location that has a lot of shade covering half of the field by the end of the day. The colors are off and we have set the white balance and used the ND filter as suggested by the camera. We watch our iris controls but we are both fairly new to this camera and don't know if there is something in the setup menu that needs changing. We have left everything at factory settings so far. Also, during editing of one of the games the exposure on one of the plays was very bright while the rest of the footage looked normal. The color looked good but when I tried to change the brightness level it looked washed out and sometimes when we are shooting early in the morning the grass will look lime green on playback. Right now we are using Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 until we get some money from these football videos and upgrade to a better editing software. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.....Phyllis

Fixing the exposure in post was a pain. However, when I shot the games yesterday I used my zebra and manual iris controls which helped tremendously. Like I said I am still new to this cam. I do feel like I just took another baby step though. Thanks for your reply.

wow, are we related. I just shot 3 games with same camera i bought on 10-5-07 and had the same shaded problem. shooting like a noob in 60i and mostly auto with an occasionaly white balance and iris touch to get some exposure down. just did some post burning today and yup, have the same problems, purples and blues yellows, look different all during 1 game, yet the night game is good to go. LOL.

think i forgot to set shutter speed before the games started.

i am so dam picky with the results, even though people really don't care about the football footage, they just love having it.

i think next week i am going to shoot in 30P, i am trying to get away from that interlaced look, but don't really want the film look or be affected by blurry capture. i think both of us need the DVXbook / DVD and i intend to do some test shots with my boys.

good luck.

I too am picky with the results much more so than my parents who just want to see their kids playing the game. I did see much better results this week. I know I need to invest in the book but my money keeps going in other directions, DVD's, cases, labels, computer parts, etc.

I did notice that there was a fence in the backgound of one the games and it had a wavy prism or rainbow looking effect to it. It's hard to describe. It doesn't show up on computer playback just on the televison. It also showed up on the roof of the concession stand and on some metal bleachers. Have you noticed any of that with your footage. If anyone has an idea how to keep this from happening I would really like to hear about it.

By the way, what shutter speed are you using outdoors on a bright sunny day?

i have tried 500 and 1000, but don't know if either one matters on good light days. havent gotten that picket fence illusion, but it may be something to do with light coming through while panning. might be hard for sensors to pick up and display it through iris in fast panning. the color thing just messed with me on last shoot.
btw, i need the book 2,
still a bit confused on how to set the dvx100b to 30P. all presets are for 60i / 24p and pa. there is a separate menu item to set it, but not sure if something else must be set to make it work.

wish i had more time to experiment between shoots.

Nice to meet a fellow North Carolinian Barry. I didn't know you were from here. I live in Belmont between Gastonia and Charlotte. I plan to get your book as soon as I get some money coming in from these football games.

Someone answered in one of my other posts that I have a moire pattern on the fence in the background at one of the fields. It was also on some bleachers and the roof of a concession stand. Is there any way to prevent getting this or is this just something that I will have to deal with in post? I don't think it is something that parents are going to care about one way or the other but I don't like it. By the way I am using Adobe Premiere 3.0 for editing and yes I know I need to get a better editing program but I have to eat the elephant one bite at a time. Thanks for all the great posts for DVX dummies like me!

By the way I am shooting in 60i. I think I read somewhere that it was recommended for faced paced sports like football games.

You may be experiencing "broadcast colors." Computer screens can display MANY more colors than a television screen, which means that the brightness of the sun on a white fence or on metal bleachers may be creating colors that your computer screen can display, but that your television cannot. As a result, your TV shows crazy looking colors, because they're "out of range." Check in your software for a broadcast colors solution of some sort. Color correction might work too...

Phyllis,

i plan on shooting the football games tomorrow in 30P, so i'll let ya know if i like the footage over the 60i. only problem is sunlight is going to be at a minimum, rain and clouds likely but i can always revert.

It seems more noticeable on TV than on the computer screen. I tried the anti-flicker filter and that didn't work. With about 50 hours of video to edit it's getting to the point of not being worth the hassle. Very few people will probably even notice it but if I do find something that works I will be glad to share the info for future reference.

I would be very interested in hearing how you did in 30p. I think we are going to have a mix of clouds and sun here. The last time we shot at this field we had good results. Hope the same holds true for today.

You might want to make sure you take a trash bag to cover your cam in case you get a drizzle. We had to tape one around our cam one week and it worked great. Good luck with your game.

Phyllis,

did the 30P thing and well, don't really know if i did it right. found the selection under a menu item and shot with clouds and rain. btw, was in the press box and stood away from window to avoid rain coming in a little so alright.

but did pretty well with shooting and manual settings, just not sure if i actually got 30P footage.

now i have started a whole new ball of wax.

i captured the footage into my computer via ilink 1394 (usual) , into premiere pro 2.0. selected the avi to work space, marked in and out points and then encoded using VBR 2 pass. couldn't really tell difference but i am too much the perfectionist and it drives me crazy.

been reading a lot of forums on the editing side and still a bit confused.

also, found that unless i use a preset to setup my 30p as a perminent settings, the dam thing reverts, when turning on and off camera, or at least i think it does.

well i guess there is no easy answer just reading and practicing setting and shooting, now editing is questions.

if it were easy, everyone would be a pro.

I stayed with 60i yesterday. The sun came out for most of the day and had better results than last time I shot on that field. We were on top of the press box and didn't have to mess with iris controls very much except for first thing in the morning and late in the evening. We watched the raw footage last night and it looked fine to me.

I am leary of changing settings this far into the season. We have playoff and bowl games coming up and since I have finally adapted to the 60i I don't want to chance messing things up. If you do get things figured out with the 30p let me know. I would be interested for future reference.

I am not a pro by any stretch of the imagination and some of the language in these posts are foreign to me but I am constantly learning which is a good thing. I have a wedding to shoot next and am still confused about settings. Seems like everyone has their own personal preference. Guess it's time I found mine.

Yes,
for sports, don't think that 60i or 30P is much the difference but when i get more experience, i may run 2 videos side by side and compare. I not a pro either, and just a video junkie that has gone from Hi8 editing with VHS to DVX100b and Adobe PP2.0. So when i get it right, i will try and let you know. Hey let me know if you post some footage, i will do the same.

All I can say, is read, read, read, and take a couple of days to experiment (if you have the time).

all the best
